The last time Lorde attended the Met Gala was in 2021 (the theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”), which is when her last album, Solar Power, dropped. Since then, we haven’t seen much of the singer, who’s been lying low. With the announcement of her first album in four years, titled Virgin (and set to drop next month), we’ve actually been expecting Lorde to make an appearance—the 2025 Met Gala would be the perfect occasion to re-emerge and make her Lordeassiance official.

This year’s ensemble is more simple than 2021’s Met Gala, but equally arresting with a hint about her upcoming project. This year, Lorde is wearing Thom Browne: A dark silver maxi skirt and matching top that’s a single piece of fabric across her chest (the fabric tape is working overtime, someone please tell us what’s the brand!). She’s also holding a matching silver tuxedo jacket and is wearing silver pointed mules. Throughout, the fabric has slate texturing. It *kind of* looks like duct tape, which is fun and fresh and a little weird. On the red carpet, Lorde told host Emma Chamberlain “It’s something of an easter egg.” She added, “All will be revealed. I just love the open back. To me it represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman, you know?”
Lorde’s hair is sleeked back and gathered in a braid (and accessorized by a silver fish), and she’s wearing minimal makeup, if any. As for jewelry, Lorde is wearing a single diamond bracelet, diamond hoop earrings, and ring on her right hand ring finger (all by Thom Browne).

Is this a nod to Lorde’s newest era? If her newest single “What Was That” is any indication, this new chapter in Lorde’s musical life feels moodier than ever, more like Melodrama than Solar Power. Perhaps as a clue, Lorde posted a video of herself dancing to “What Was That” in her Met Gala outfit about two hours ago.
“Hide your forks,” she captioned the video. She certainly ATE.
