How to wear a baseball cap

Rihanna wears one all of the time. J.Crew Creative Director Jenna Lyons is a fan. And street style stars during the latest round of fashion weeks couldn’t seem to take them off. That’s right, the baseball cap is the accessory of the instant, and it’s not going away anytime soon.

Here are five tips on how to wear a baseball cap and look seriously stylish (read: not look like you just left a sports stadium). For outfit ideas, click through the gallery above to see how street style stars are wearing theirs!

1. Pair it with something unexpected. Street style stars are pairing baseball caps with unexpected outfits—everything from cocktail dresses to pantsuits. It is the unexpected styling that makes the look work.

2. Go bold with your hat choice. Don’t just go for any baseball cap—pick up one in leather, in a neon color, or even studded—to really stand out.

3. Stay away from wearing it with other athletic gear. You are going to want to the put the sneakers down when you are wearing a baseball cap. You don’t want to look like you just left a game.

4. Wear it facing front. We couldn’t be happier to report that the ’90s trend of backwards hats is officially dead. Wear your baseball cap facing front. Enough said.

5. It can be practical if you need it to be. Bad hair day? Getting off a long flight? The baseball cap can be your friend in those situations and so many more.
