Nowadays, the Internet is a theory factory. Now I’m not sure if these theories are real, genuine theories about anything or just basic pattern recognition named a theory to provide an air of expertise. Okay tbh, it’s pretty clear what my opinion is on the Internet trend. But anyway. I do think that it’s worth taking a look at patterns in style, especially celebrity style. And while I do hate making definitive statements about personal style, because honestly I think we need a post mortem on the topic at this point, it’s interesting to see how style icons are influencing the culture in ways both new and old.
An Instagram account, @style.analytics made a video describing a pattern she noticed among the fashion community. This user noticed that it seems either everyone is doing one of two things in fashion: either it’s the kind of look Mary Kate Olsen was rocking in the 2000s—think messy, thrown around Balenciaga City bag, urban bohemian hipster, what we now might refer to as “indie sleaze”—or it’s sleek, grown up minimalism, something similar to how both sisters dress now and also the kind of aesthetic sensibility they infuse into their designs at The Row.
Some version of this is always in the air. There’s always a Gemini energy to fashion, where two personalities, one adopting some form of minimalism and the other adopting some form of maximalism, can coexist harmoniously, like twins.
