I Bought the TikTok-Viral Buckle Flats & the Compliments Are Rolling In

Ballet flats are back in a big way and as an elder millennial who wore them around NYC for years and years, I wasn’t really jumping at the chance to jump back into the trend. Then I spotted Ganni’s buckle flats, or the Black Wide Welt Buckle Ballerinas as is their government name. It was love at first sight. Because these aren’t 2010’s ballet flats. These are sturdy and add a touch of edge to any outfit.
I went to my local Ganni store in Los Angeles to try them on, crossing my fingers that TikTokers had been lying to me and they were actually uncomfortable. Then, I’d save some money. But there was no lie. I tried on my usual size (35/5) and they fit like a glove. I walked around the store and they were actually comfortable, even for someone like me who usually chooses Adidas Sambas over heels. The soft leather didn’t rub and the slingback strap easily kept them on my feet. (I find mules so uncomfortable for that reason.)
Even though they’re pricey at $395, I knew these would have a great cost per wear. If I can wear them to a red carpet event, a dinner, and out dancing, they’re worth every penny. I’m in my late 30s and I’m officially over my feet hurting. Still, I paid for them on Klarna. I’m not made of money!
Since buying the Ganni buckle flats, I’ve worn them everywhere. The flat squared block heel allows me to really pound the pavement — or walk through dirt and grass — without feeling like I’m walking barefoot. And I get compliments everywhere I go.
I got the black pair, just like the above TikTokers, @kailavanstechelman, @toranorth, and @haileyscott77. I knew in a neutral shade I would wear them with dresses and jeans and pretty much anything else. But the Wide Welt Buckle Ballerinas also come in white, snake print, and an ultra-trendy red color.
Even on Klarna and Afterpay, I fully understand how pricey Ganni flats are. I haven’t found a close dupe yet, but there are similar styles online for way less money. I saved up for the ones I wanted but if they’re too steep for your budget, here are some of my other favorites.
