I never thought I’d be someone who rents clothing. It’s not that I don’t approve of wearing pre-worn items (I am a big second-hand shopper and vintage collector), it’s just that I didn’t think it was worth it to pay a monthly fee for clothing that I have to send back. My mindset completely changed last December when I went on a trip to London with my sister. I wanted some new sweaters and other clothing items to wear on my trip, but after spending a lot of money on plane tickets and Airbnbs, I couldn’t justify another hefty credit card bill. Enter: Nuuly, the clothing subscription company with all of my favorite brands, including Free People, Cynthia Rowley, Damson Madder, Farm Rio, and lots of Anthropologie labels, just to name a few.

Ahead of my trip, I signed up for a monthly subscription and ordered several cute sweaters, a plaid skirt (which I ended up keeping—I searched forever for one like this!), and some cozy long-sleeve tops. The best part? My entire Nuuly order would have cost me around $850 if I purchased all six items myself, but I only spent $98 for it all. That meant I didn’t have to cut into my souvenir budget and could still look cute and festive for the holiday season in the U.K.

Nuuly is now something I use on-and-off when I want a wardrobe refresh without spending a ton of money. I’m also obsessed with shopping the secondhand Nuuly Resale finds on Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters, which feature past Nuuly items for so much less. I once bought a $215 Seventy + Mochi denim jumpsuit for just $30 (!!) and my favorite Ruby + Ed Zebra Oversized Faux Fur Coat (originally $320, on sale for $40) is still available on Anthro’s resale shop (or you can also rent it, here).

Here’s everything you need to know before signing up for a Nuuly subscription, plus the cute late summer picks in my most recent Nuuly box that you can rent and shop.

How Much Does Nuuly Cost?

Subscribing to Nuuly will set you back $98 per month, plus tax. Your monthly subscription allows you to rent six items from Nuuly. If you want to add on some items, you can add four more pieces for an additional $20 each. Shipping and returns are free, and you don’t have to worry about washing your selections before sending them back. Even better: Nuuly doesn’t have damage or late fees. If you don’t return your order on time, you’ll simply be charged for your next month’s Nuuly, allowing you to keep the items for a little while longer. And, once you return your items, you can make your next month’s selections.

Another cool Nuuly perk worth considering: If you love an item and don’t want to send it back, you can buy it directly from your account at a discounted rate since it’s technically “used.” I’ve done this for several pieces, including a brand-new Mare Mare skirt and a Re_Nuuly sweater (pictured below) that I got for 20% off.

How Does Nuuly Work?

Nuuly is a clothing rental company that allows you to rent trendy and stylish pieces for a fraction of their original cost. For your monthly fee, you get six different pieces, which comes out to around $16 per item. Plus, you have the option to add four extra items for $20 each.

Once you subscribe, you can shop for your selections. Nuuly’s website makes it super easy to find what you are looking for, too. You can either shop all or narrow it down based on different categories, such as tops, bottoms, dresses, jumpsuits, and so on. There is also a special events section for more formal items, as well as a section for shopping specific brands. And, if you want to narrow down your choices based on the fit (which includes maternity, tall, petite, and plus), you can do that, too.

After you’ve made your selections, Nuuly will ship the items to you (this usually takes a couple of days) along with a return shipping label that makes it super easy to get the selections back to the clothing rental company. You’ll have the rest of the month to wear your new pieces, and if you wish to keep any of the items, you can buy them directly from your account—just make sure to leave them out of your return package! If you need more time with your pieces, you can also keep them for longer, but you can’t make your next month’s selections until you return them.

Is the Nuuly Subscription Worth It?

If you want to add a few new items to your wardrobe every month, with the convenience of pausing or canceling at any time, then the Nuuly subscription is worth it. $98 is much less than you’d likely spend on just one (or a couple) items in your Nuuly box, and a great option for those extra busy months when you need a few new dresses or other clothing items but don’t want to spend the money (or give up the closet space).

I personally love Nuuly for travel because you can get some new clothing items without spending hundreds of dollars on a new wardrobe and a pricey plane ticket. Renting from Nuuly also allows you to test drive some wishlist items and even purchase the gently used piece for less.

There are some downsides worth noting, though. One of my biggest issues with Nuuly is that once you select an item and size, you can’t exchange it if it doesn’t fit. You also can’t swap your six items throughout the month, like Rent the Runway. However, Nuuly is cheaper than Rent the Runway, so you do have to pay extra for a feature like that.

Nuuly Cost vs. Rent the Runway

A Nuuly subscription costs $98 per month, making it cheaper than Rent the Runway when you consider the cost per clothing item. However, Nuuly offers only one subscription plan with the option to add up to four additional items per month for $20 each, so you can customize it a little. Rent the Runway offers two plans: a “Limited Closet” plan for $94, which includes five items with a retail value of up to $350, and two “Full Closet Access” plans that include items with a retail value of up to $3,000. The Full Closet Access plans include a five-item and one monthly shipment option for $119 and a 10-item and two monthly shipment option for $144.

Is It Hard to Cancel Nuuly?

Cancelling your Nuuly subscription is super easy—and I’d admittedly done it a bunch. All you have to do is go to your account and click on “subscription.” This page gives you the option to either cancel or snooze your membership. If you hit snooze, you can only pause your subscription for a maximum of three months at a time. If you’re like me and a bit forgetful when it comes to paused subscriptions, I recommend canceling and then re-joining when you’re ready to rent again. Once your Nuuly items are returned, you can pause or cancel your subscription at any time.

Shop My Nuuly Picks

This summer, I wanted to add a few more dresses to my wardrobe, plus some lightweight tops that are versatile enough to wear with jeans, skirts, and shorts. Here are the six items I picked in my recent Nuuly—including the two items I ended up buying because I loved them so much.

Damson Madder Meri Mini Dress
This Damnson Madder Meri Mini Dress is one of the cutest dresses ever. I bought it to wear with sneakers and sandals over summer, but they also look super cute with boots (pictured) for transitional fall weather. I love that it has an oversized fit that doesn’t look like you’re wearing a bag, but also doesn’t really stick to your body, either. And, while I am not normally into a bandana print, I actually love the subtle paisley details and Western flair it gave my wardrobe.

I absolutely ended up buying this one straight from my Nuuly box—oops. If you want to do the same, you can still rent it with a Nuuly subscription, or shop the same style on Nordstrom, ShopBop, or Revolve

The Colette Crop Wide-Leg Pants: Danielle Kroll Edition
I’ve had my eyes on these wide-leg pants for quite some time, so when I saw that this fun Danielle Kroll print was available to rent on Nuuly, it was an immediate yes. To be honest, I didn’t expect to love these pants as much as I do, since the style isn’t something I usually go for. They’re made of a super lightweight viscose, cotton, and elastane blend that feels like loungewear. I loved them so much that I ended up keeping them because they, of course, look so cute but are also comfortable enough for working from home.

Maeve Embroidered Mini Shift Dress
The Maeve Embroidered Mini Shift Dress is another item in my Nuuly that I desperately wanted to keep but it was a little out of my price range, even with the Nuuly discount. This dress is super comfy and flattering—and I don’t think I’ll ever get over the cute embroidered details. I also love that it is so versatile and would work great as a wedding guest dress with a pair of pointed stiletto heels or block heel sandals, but also looks just as cute and chic with a pair of boots or even some high-top sneakers. The dress is constructed from a comfortable, almost linen-like cotton with a little bit of stretch, so it’s not restrictive.

Re_Nuuly x Tricia Fix Reworked Wrap Jumpsuit
One of my favorite things about renting from Nuuly is the Re_Nuuly x Tricia Fix collection. These are out-of-circulation rentals that have been altered and refreshed with Tricia Fix’s upcycled fabric, vintage patches, appliques, and more. The bow sweater I mentioned was a Re_Nuuly item and is one of my favorite things in my closet.

While this Re_Nuuly x Tricia Fix Reworked Wrap Jumpsuit wasn’t my favorite item in my Nuuly box (I didn’t love the style on me), it was probably one of the comfiest jumpsuits I’ve ever tried on—and the cross stitch embroidery details made it all the more special. Since this jumpsuit is a Re_Nuuly item, you can’t purchase it unless you rent it. However, if you want to shop some past Re_Nuuly x Tricia Fix pieces, you can find some on Free People.

Tassel Sleeveless Crochet Scallop-Trim Top
The Tassel Sleeveless Crochet Scallop-Trim Top was probably one of the most versatile pieces I rented, and it took some serious convincing not to buy it (the fact that it’s currently sold out at Anthropologie didn’t help me make this decision!). This knitted tank top features a cute collection of striped hues that paired well with my favorite baggy green jeans from Urban Outfitters (which are also sadly sold out—sorry!!). But I love that the tank also worked with blue denim cut-off shorts and even looked cute under a pair of overalls.

Glamorous Floral Trellis Linen-Blend Bow-Back Mini Dress
The Glamorous Floral Trellis Linen-Blend Bow-Back Mini Dress is a cute, casual dress that is great for spring and summer, but can also moonlight as a more transitional piece for fall if styled properly. This is another piece that is currently sold out online, so you’ll have to add it to your Nuuly order to try it out (or save the Urban Outfitters link in case it comes back!).
