Shoe trends come and go, but some styles are iconic enough to live in our closets forever. I’m not talking about general silhouettes like the loafer, or a classic white sneaker — I’m talking specifically about the Frye Campus 14L. Next to maybe the Converse Chuck Taylor Sneakers, these boots are one of the most iconic shoe styles, with generations of loyalists (many of whom have owned theirs for decades).

I’ve personally lusted for a pair of these sleek knee-high western boots since I was a teenager, when my Millennial youth’s style hyperfix was on all things bohemian (I aspired to be a walking advertisement for the Free People catalog). And after several years of stomping around in lookalike styles — there is no shortage of Frye boot dupes out there — I finally got my dream pair, just in time for spring.

Everyone Needs a Pair of Frye Campus Boots in Their Whimsy Wardrobe
Frye Campus Boots
The Frye Campus boots are designed to be worn and worn well. They’re constructed from durable 100% scrunch leather, with leather lining and a leather outsole. This durable, high-quality construction means they are, like other wardrobe staples that last a lifetime, an investment, but they’re so worth it (and the brand offers a payment plan through Klarna, making that price a little less painful).

In addition to the materials and design, what makes these square-toe boots stand out is their colorways. The original Frye campus boots were light brown, but the brand now carries them in 17 different leather colors. I’ll admit: I was tempted to get these Frye boots in their OG hue, but one thing about me is I stand by the fact that personal style is timeless. Plus, I consider pink to be a neutral color. So, of course, I went with the pink colorway (though the banana-yellow and royal-blue were also calling my name).

These are the perfect everyday boots that go with literally everything in my wardrobe. I love how classically western they look with my favorite (and sold out — sorry!!) Levi’s denim dress, but that I can also pull style inspiration from my Gen Z friends and wear them with a pair of boxer shorts, a cropped cami tank, and a head scarf once the weather warms up.
