Cynthia Erivo has had a banner year, to say the least. Her profile has surely risen, and she’s got an entirely new audience of people knowing name. Erivo made an artistic home on the stage, so her casting in Wicked‘s film adaptation makes complete sense, but prior to gracing the big screen, she’s been busy. In fact, we found pictures of her on red carpets dating back to 2013. In the last decade, Cynthia Erivo’s red carpet style evolution has gone through many iterations.

Erivo has been to more Met Galas than we can count, her first one being in 2017, where she wore a white asymmetrical gown from Thom Browne. The theme honored Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo. She’s attended Tony Awards, movie premieres, awards shows, and more. And she’s worn designers who are household names, like Louis Vuitton and Schiaparelli to more independent designers like Luisa Beccaria and Giles Deacon. She’s experimented a lot with silhouettes, sometimes opting for more basic A-line shapes, and other times going for more avant garde shapes.

Since the start of the Wicked press tour, Erivo’s looks have had a really specific look. She’s really leaned into the whole “method dressing,” which a handful of popular actresses have employed before, namely Zendaya, Margot Robbie, and Blake Lively for their recent releases. Though I do think that’s going to go out of fashion soon. Actress, artist, and low-key It Girl Hari Nef called it boring recently, and plenty of other people have said the same. But the truth remains that it’s a great way to get a lot of attention on a movie, even if it’s not necessarily cool. And Wicked‘s press tour is definitely doing numbers, and Erivo and her co-star Ariana Grande have made it pretty clear that they’re not concerned even in the slightest about looking cool. This movie is about sincerity and lots of tears, and dressing in costume is what earnest musical theatre kids do best.
