News broke in May 2023 that Kim Cattrall would reprise her role in the And Just Like That Season 2 finale, as the most recent revelation in Kim and SJP’s relationship timeline.

Variety reported at the time that Cattrall filmed one scene on March 22 in New York City without seeing or speaking to any of her co-stars or showrunner Michael Patrick King. The scene sees Samantha, who moved to London after a fallout with Carrie, have a phone conversation with Carrie.

The insider reported that Cattrall’s “completely” secretive scene was filmed in a town car in a parking garage near Silvercup Studios in Queens, New York City, where interior scenes for And Just Like That are filmed. The source also told The New York Post that Cattrall arrived in an SUV with blacked-out windows to hide her from onlookers.

A source also told The New York Post that the creators of And Just Like That planned for Season 2 to have 10 episodes, however it ended up splitting the finale into two parts and having 11 episodes after Cattrall agreed to film Samantha’s cameo. “The fact that they’re keeping it very hush-hush says that there’s some implication that she might be coming back — not this season, but it’s definitely a cliffhanger that’s gonna get people to come back for Season 3,” the insider said.

Cynthia Nixon told Vanity Fair in June that she hadn’t seen the episode and that Cattrall’s absence from the show isn’t something they talk about but that it felt different without her there. 

“It felt very different also because we have these new amazing characters, and we’re older and our fictional children are now largely grown. Many things felt different. But the main thing that felt so great was that everybody who was there really wanted to be there,” Nixon said. “That’s just the bottom line. We all love each other, we love our show, we wanted to do more of it. And we all wanted to be there. So that makes an enormous difference, that you’re not walking around on eggshells with someone who’s unhappy for reasons that are hard to even understand what they are.”

2022

Kim Cattrall reveals what was on the cards for Sex And The City 3, which SJP claimed she “killed”. In a profile with Variety, Cattrall said she didn’t want to participate in the project partly because it included her character sexting Miranda’s underage son, Brady. “It’s a no” to any potential reunion. “It’s powerful to say no.”

2021

Chris Noth, who starred as Mr. Big for the six seasons of the show and the movies, finally commented on the feud himself during an interview with The Guardian in 2021. 

According to Noth, Cattrall and Parker’s feud was truly “uncomfortable”—but he still sides with his on-screen love interest. Noth said, “I have to tell you, I have absolutely no idea what her thinking is, or her emotions,” he said of Cattrall. “I do know that I’m very close with SJ and [Cattrall’s] descriptions of her don’t even come close.”

The actor went on to note that their feud was a difficult situation for all. “I liked her, I thought she was marvelous in the show and some people move on for their own reasons,” he explained. “I don’t know what hers were. I just wish that whole thing had never happened because it was sad and uncomfortable.” Noth continued, “I just don’t like to see anyone talking down about SJ because she’s a target and people can be nasty. I feel very protective of her and I was not happy about that. That’s all I’ll say about that.”

2021

The Daily Mail confirmed in November 2021 that Samantha wasn’t killed off in And Just Like That and instead had a fallout with Carrie. “We get into her absence very quickly,” a source told the newspaper at the time. “Viewers will learn that Samantha and Carrie have fallen out over Carrie firing Samantha as her publicist and that they no longer talk. This effectively ends their personal relationship. You’ll see as the series progresses over the 10 episodes that Carrie misses her friend and wants to repair the relationship. In the words of Oscar Wilde, life imitates art.”

The insider explained that And Just Like That decided to not kill off Samantha in case Cattrall wanted to return for the reboot for season 2. “We’ll announce eventually that the show will have a second season. This isn’t a one-off, this will be a series,” the insider said. “It will be quite a while between the first and second series as Sarah Jessica Parker has a busy schedule and we have a lot of work to do to get Kim Cattrall back.” The source continued, “We all miss Kim and we hope she comes back for the second season—the door will never close on her, she is an important part of the franchise…On set, Kim has been missed by everyone. The cast and crew love her and hope she returns.”

2020

In December 2020, Deadline reveals that a Sex And The City reboot was in the works but Cattrall was “unlikely” to rejoin the cast. 

2018

In January 2018, during an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the host jokingly asked SJP which part he would play if there is a new SATC film. “Well, there’s an opening,” she responds. “Well, according to very recent documentation of why we’re not making it, it’s because the part usually played by Kim Cattrall has been vacated. So that’s what I mean.” 

In February, Cattrall shared on Instagram that her brother passed away. SJP to commented her condolences and Cattrall responded with a new Instagram post: a text box that read: “I don’t need your love and support at this time @sarahjessicaparker,” with a caption saying, “My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’ Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.” Eek. 

In a People interview that came out later that month, SJP said, “I never responded to the conversation Kim had with Piers Morgan, where she said things that were really hurtful about me … So there was no fight; it was completely fabricated because I actually never responded. And I won’t, because she needed to say what she needed to say, and that is her privilege.”

“But, no, there is no catfight,” SJP insisted to Vulture. “There never has been a catfight. I’ve never fought with someone publicly in my life, nor would I … We are enormously proud of what we got to do, and I don’t want someone sharing thoughts publicly, which is Kim’s right to do, and that is what it is.”

2017

In a tweet in 2017, Cattrall confirmed that she had retired as the character after news broke that a third Sex and the City movie had been canceled. “Woke 2 a @MailOnline (poop emoji) storm! The only ‘DEMAND’ I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film….& that was back in 2016,” Cattrall tweeted at the time in response to a Daily Mail article that reported that she would only sign on for Sex and the City 3 if the production studio for the movie, Warner Bros. Pictures, also produced her other projects.

“The only reason this movie isn’t being made is because of Kim Cattrall. Everyone was looking forward to making this movie but Kim made it all about her, always playing the victim,” a source told The Daily Mail at the time.

In an interview with Piers Morgan in October of that year, Cattrall made it clear that she would never play Samantha again. “Not for me. That was part of turning 60. That was a very clear moment of, how many years do I have left and what do I want to do with it? What haven’t I done? I feel that the show was the best when it was the series and the bonus was the two movies,” she said. She explained that she rejected the offer for a third Sex and the City movie because she wants to move on to a new “chapter” in her life.

“The answer was simply thank you, but no, I’m good,” she said. “This isn’t about more money. It’s not about more scenes. It’s not about any of those things. This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another,” she said. “It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it.”

Cattrall also confirmed in the interview that she and SJP have “never been friends.” “We’ve been colleagues and, in some ways, it’s a very healthy place to be,” she said at the time. Cattrall also accused SJP of continuing the narrative that she quit Sex and the City because she wanted more money. “This is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City, and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker,” Cattrall said. “I think she could’ve been nicer. I really think she could’ve been nicer. I don’t know what her issue is.”

2016

SJP goes on the Howard Stern Show in October 2016, saying people seem to enjoy pushing the narrative of a feud, and she’s bothered by that. In the same interview, she does say, “Was every day perfect? Were people always desperately, hopelessly in love with each other? No!” She also says, “This is a family of people that needed each other, relied upon each other, and loved each other.”

2009

A 2009 article in New York Magazine claimed Parker and Cattrall were no longer on speaking terms, “making everyone on the set of the new Sex and the City movie uncomfortable.” Sex and the City 2 was released in 2010. However, both of them later said in separate interviews that a feud didn’t exist, and people simply didn’t want to believe they got on.

2008

When Sex and the City ended in 2004, a movie based on the show was already in the works. However, production was put to a halt when Cattrall allegedly didn’t want to be a part of it. In 2008, her demands were met and production started up again.

A friend of hers told the Daily News at the time though, “Kim does not want to . . . do the film. She feels she has been treated horribly by Sarah Jessica Parker for six years,” per the New York Post.

In June that year, Marie Claire magazine asked Cattrall to respond to the rumor that she was holding out agreeing to make the highly-anticipated Sex And The City movie. She responded: “Four years ago I was going through a painful public divorce, the series was coming to an end, and my father was diagnosed with dementia. I felt it was time to be with my real family,” she said. “A year and a half ago, when I was sent the script, I was ready and strong enough to revisit Samantha. In some ways, I’m glad we waited. The script and the experience of making the movie was the best possible reunion.”

In the same interview, the show’s creator Darren Star made reference to the drama playing out in the tabloids. “I think you have to draw the line between what’s happening in gossip columns and what’s happening on a set,” he said. “You can’t create that kind of chemistry. When you do a series for so many years, you can’t fake it completely.”

2008

In May 2008, the Telegraph reported that Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker had indeed had a falling out over money. When SJP moved up to become an executive producer of the show, her salary went up by an estimated $300,000, which caused Cattrall to ask for a higher salary herself. According to the British newspaper, this led the cast and crew to be unhappy to the point of choosing not to sit with Cattrall at “mealtimes”. 

In the same report, Cattrall responded to a question about why she sat apart from the rest of the cast at the Emmys in 2004: “Are we the best of friends? No. We’re professional actresses. We have our own separate lives.”

Parker rebutted that statement, saying that they were friends: “Honestly, we are all friends and I wish I saw more of Kim. She mentioned money and no one should vilify her for it. People made a decision that we had vilified her.”

Tensions also hit an all-time high because of the tight-knit culture between Nixon, Davis and SJP, who’d known each other since their pre-teens as stars on Broadway. 

2004

In 2004, Sex And the City, the groundbreaking HBO series featuring four “single” women navigating life and love in New York City, ended seemingly abruptly after six seasons. 

It wasn’t canceled. In fact, there was speculation that disputes over pay were why the show wasn’t renewed for a seventh season. Cattrall told Jonathan Ross, “I felt after six years it was time for all of us to participate in the financial windfall of Sex and the City. When they [HBO] didn’t seem keen on that I thought it was time to move on.” However, Cattrall did not rule out playing Samantha again: “If the deal was right and the script was fabulous, absolutely I would.”

At the Emmys that same year where cast members usually all sit together, Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis all sat together while Cattrall sat at another table, the biggest indication that Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker’s relationship was on the rocks.
