I usually dread Mondays—but the first Monday in May is the exception. That’s when the Met Gala takes over New York City, transforming the Met steps into a runway for fashion’s biggest night.
This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and its dress code, “Tailored for You,” invited bold interpretations rooted in precision and flair. Celebrities reimagined power dressing with sharp tailoring, dramatic silhouettes, statement accessories, and unforgettable beauty moments—think towering hair, graphic eye makeup, and main-character manicures.
Because the night celebrated menswear and the artistry of tailoring, the guys especially stood out. Co-chairs Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams delivered high-fashion drama with textured fabrics, striking patterns, and structures that commanded attention.
They captured the spirit of the exhibit—which shares the same name as the theme—”Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The installation explores the evolution of Black fashion from the 18th century to today, centering the concept of dandyism: a style rooted in elegance, individuality, and rebellion. Following the abolition of slavery, dandyism became a powerful tool for Black expression and self-definition within high society. The Met’s exhibition brings this history to life through garments, paintings, photographs, literature, and film.
