Tyla has been on the minds and in the ears of everyone since her song “Water” came out and popped off on TikTok, but then she garnered extra attention after her appearance at the Met Gala this past year, where the theme was Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. She wore a gown made of sand from the mind of Balmain’s Creative Director Olivier Rousteing.
Rousteing told Vogue, “The inspiration behind this creation stemmed from a desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece. The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination and I could not be happier with the end result.”
And the Met Gala is one of fashion’s biggest stages, so it’s no small feat to be the best dressed in a room like that. Since then, Tyla has been taking her red carpet appearances seriously. It’s no secret by this point that fashion for celebrities is about brokering power. Especially for public appearances, so little is about a dress. It’s about relationships with the business of fashion, about raising your profile, and it’s definitely smart for artists to take their styling seriously for their careers. I mean, we all know Zendaya’s story with Law Roach about how they strategized her public appearances to raise her profile as a serious actress between her transition from Disney to more adult roles.
So in that sense, Tyla’s appearance at the Met Gala was a debut of sorts. She had the music career to get herself invited, and what she did with that moment was a triumph. It showed the fashion world that Tyla is a name worth paying attention to, even if she’s early in her career. She was a total force. And you can bet she’ll be carrying that energy into the rest of her red carpet looks.
