The high bun is an eternal hair classic. Not just beloved by ballerinas the world over, high buns are a chic, sleek way to get your hair out of your face—and look totally elegant doing it, as Darby Stanchfield has been showing us lately (love you on Scandal, girl!). But you don’t want to look like a ten year old on her way to dance class, which is why our version of the high bun is a little fuller and less done than the ones you might remember from your childhood. Here’s how to do a high bun in 30 seconds flat.

Step 1: Pull all of your hair up into a high ponytail. If you have very thick or curly hair, don’t make the pony too high—the weight of the bun will give you a headache.

Step 2: Split the hair of your ponytail into two equal sections. Twist each section loosely so that each individual “tail” holds together.

Step 3: Now you’ll create the bun—and the secret is utilizing the hairtie at the base of your pony for support. Cross the twisted sections over one another in the front, then in the back. Depending on the length of your hair, you may need to repeat this a few times.

Step 4: Secure the ends of your twisted tails with bobby pins. Feel free to loosen up your bun by gently tugging on sections of hair.

Step 5: Hit with some medium-hold hairspray to fight flyaways, and you’re done! You now have a flawless high bun that any ballerina would envy.
