“I’ve got sunshine in my pocket,” sings a man wearing pants with pockets (Justin Timberlake) on his new single, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” which was released last night at midnight.
The song and accompanying music video, JT’s first since 2013, are meant to gear us up for his upcoming movie, “Trolls,” an animated DreamWorks movie about Troll dolls—the vid stars Anna Kendrick (dancing), Gwen Stefani (driving), James Corden (dancing), both members of Icona Pop (playing with puppies), comedian Ron Funches (dancing), and Kunal Nayyar of “The Big Bang Theory” (also dancing), all of whom will voice various trolls in the film, out November 4. The group of average persons—all drinking, all dancing, many wearing bad hats—in the recording studio with Timberlake (also wearing a bad hat) have yet to be identified.
“Can’t Stop the Feeling” is a good song in the same way that Pharrell’s “Happy” is a good song, which is to say that everyone will love it, and it will be your mom’s ringtone. But I do wonder: How many songs do we need that encourage people to “just dance”? At what point do we put a moratorium on “just dancing”? Never, probably.
