Really, guys? (Getty Images)

Sorry Gwen and Gavin, but you’ve been knocked off the top of the “devastating breakup of the week” leaderboard. Why? Um, because Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have broken up. Yes, the same Kermit and Piggy who tied the knot in in front of every single Jim Henson puppet in the final scene of the 1984 masterpiece “Muppets Take Manhattan.”

The news came on Tuesday, and was delivered publicly by Kermit himself using the smart, satirical wit the Muppets are known for.

“It’s a day-by-day, moment-by-moment process,” Kermit—who stars in ABC’s The Muppets mockumentary premiering on Sept. 22—revealed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically.

“It can be tough to work with your ex,” he continued. “There will be an official statement released in the press. I don’t want to betray anything.”

Sure enough, Kermie released said statement—how else?—on Twitter, explaining that the couple “made the difficult decision to terminate” their relationship.

According to TV Line, Kermit confirmed that he’s already dating another pig—clearly the guy has a type—named Denise who “works in marketing” at ABC.

Naturally, Miss Piggy herself breezed into the panel, and when asked how the split might affect the series—which will take us behind the scenes of a fictional new talk show called “Up Late With Miss Piggy” — she quipped, “Any kind of attention is good publicity.”

It’s a smart move on ABC and showrunner Bill Prady‘s part to drum up a “scandal” right before the new show, which will offer “unfettered access” to the puppets’ personal lives (to which Kermit said, “I tried to fetter it — but it didn’t work out.”)

We have a feeling it’s not really the end for these two anthropomorphic celebs—here’s hoping they get their sh*t together.
