When I first learned how to crochet, I followed a free YouTube tutorial for a simple beanie because the thought of starting with a stuffed animal (aka, amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting stuffed animals and objects) seemed too daunting. Then The Woobles entered the chat and completely transformed the beginner-friendly crochet project space—and quickly became the must-have gift for the holiday season.

The Woobles Crochet Kits at a Glance

Are The Woobles Kits Worth It?

I have logged well over 10,000 hours of crochet and even write and publish my own crochet patterns, but I am not as experienced with amigurumi projects. So, when I saw The Woobles Beginner Crochet Amigurumi Kits on social media, I was definitely intrigued (and, honestly, a little suspicious of all of these so-called “beginners’” finished projects—they were too good). Now, several kits in, I totally get the hype.

The Woobles doesn’t make crochet easy (warning: your first project might not look like the picture) but through the easy-to-follow tutorial videos and variety of projects, it makes it accessible and fun. I like to think of The Woobles as Duolingo for crocheters: You learn how to make specific patterns, with lots of hand-holding, and can practice and practice until you’re ready to try more complex projects.

These kits also come with everything you need, including the exact amount of yarn, filler, and the right crochet hook size. This means you don’t have to go out and buy all of these supplies and ultimately end up with a ton of excess that you might never use again.

I also love that The Woobles collaborates with other brands to create patterns for characters such as Gudetama, Miffy, Harry Potter, Snoopy, Hello Kitty, and the Power Puff Girls, in addition to its regular rotation of characters. This means you can not only learn how to make lots of different amigurumi projects, but also helps motivate you to learn through some of your other interests.

With the holidays coming up, it’s worth noting how giftable these kits are. Whether you know someone who wants to flex their creative muscles or have a crafty person on your list who would love a new project to try, there are so many ways to gift The Woobles. You can opt for a simple gift card or select a specific kit or bundle. The new Toy to the World Advent Calendar also makes a great gift for those who are already fans of The Woobles. Or, you could also put together a cute gift basket with The Woobles Easy Peasy Yarn in several colors, The Woobles Crochet Amigurumi for Every Occasion pattern book, a 4mm crochet hook, and The Woobles Wee Woobly Bits Bundle

Where to Buy Woobles Yarn

Once you buy a kit and have access to a pattern, you can make it over and over again with The Woobles Easy Peasy Yarn, available at Walmart and The Woobles’ website. This yarn skein is $10 for 170 yards and is more than enough to make several amigurumi projects. Michaels also makes a The Woobles yarn dupe, called Loops & Threads Cuddle Craft Tube™ Yarn, which is $7 for 109 yards. In addition to yarn, you’ll also need a restock of the amigurumi stuffing. For this, a bag of Poly-Fil from Michaels will go a long way, as you only need a little bit for each project.

If you lose your crochet hook or want to stock up on the correct The Woobles crochet hook size, choose a size 4mm crochet hook. I’m a big fan of these Clover hooks and Knitters Pride Zing Crochet Hooks. When purchasing a kit, you might also want to add the The Woobles Wee Woobly Bits Bundle to your cart as well. This comes with additional eyes as well as stitch markers, pins, and a pair of scissors.
