Are you old enough to drink? Well, you’re probably too old to attract a boyfriend.

You’ve always suspected it, and now you have proof: Men are dogs, no matter how old they get, prefer women in their early 20s. Read: Most men are about as deep as a puddle when it comes to dating.

In an article for Jezebel, OKCupid cofounder Christian Rudder analyzed data from the dating site to work out which ages are most appealing to men and which are preferred by women.

The findings show that women tend to be attracted older men until the age of 29, at which point they’re eyeing guys their own age or slightly younger. At 40, women start looking for men who are younger than them.

Not so surprising, right?

Well, then there’s the other side of this study, which is actually worse than we expected. It shows men ages 20 to 50 are almost exclusively attracted to women who are 20 years old, with some age brackets preferring 21, 22, 23, and 24 year olds … but no older. Seriously: The age 25 doesn’t even feature on the study’s graph of results.

The findings aren’t shocking, but we still can’t help but feel a little, well, shocked by the results. After all, this isn’t some quick study. OKCupid looked at data built from tens of millions of preferences expressed in the act of finding a date.

Rudder elaborated for Jezebel: “After [a man] hits 30, the latter half of [OKCupid’s] age range (that is, women over 35) might as well not exist. Younger is better, and youngest is best of all, and if ‘over the hill’ means the beginning of a person’s decline, a straight woman is over the hill as soon as she’s old enough to drink.”

That’s so messed up, we don’t even know where to start.
