Rustic Luxury Awaits At Tulum’s Hidden Gem Hideaway

Only in-the-know travelers have discovered the magic.

Thirteen miles from downtown Tulum, sparkling turquoise waters meet calming mangroves at the sprawling Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya. There is nothing uncool or overwrought about this jungle oasis: every element of modern luxury flows seamlessly and stylishly, down to the room key—a waterproof beaded bracelet.

Tulum exploded as a hip, less traditionally touristy Mexican travel destination back in 2015. Influencers flocked to feast on fish tacos and vibes in equal measure. Ablaze with beachfront revelers and beats, the hotel zone expanded with hit-or-miss bungalows, many too noisy at night for sleep and serenity, others lacking charm and amenities.

My advice to you: don’t risk any aspect of your precious Paid Time Off. Stay at the Conrad, which offers the experience of Tulum, plus a paradise in its own right. After opening in 2022, the uncrowded getaway with stellar reviews is a best-kept secret.

Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya Review

My boyfriend and I are annoyingly discerning travelers who seek out character, culture, and personality in our hotels, usually eschewing resorts for boutique boarding. We spend at most two to three nights at the same place, and eager to ensure we maximize our exposure, we rarely spend much time in our accommodations. And though we love the ocean and beaches, we don’t love sunbathing or waterlogged all-inclusive drinks. We want culturally relevant experiences, stimulating environments, and flavors we want to bathe in.

As we entered the Conrad Tulum’s vast, wood-carved doors, the experience nearly took our breath away. Copal incense burns, infusing the air with relaxation, respect, and Mesoamerican tradition. The property blends modern architecture with natural materials, a wholly congruous extension of the surrounding beauty. This isn’t your typical resort that comes plastic-wrapped, blending artifice with easily digested Mexican culture.

We instantly felt at ease and inspired.

The rooms are quaint and handily designed, with cool A.C., comfy beds, showers stocked with Byredo products, and a view that makes you feel like you’re the only ones in the jungle.

The beach couldn’t be more idyllic. Minimalist but well-maintained, we didn’t have to overlook seaweed or floating trampolines. The water is warm and so pristine that we didn’t need the provided snorkels to spot fish. We spent hours there playing volleyball and Scrabble, swimming, spotting wildlife (from coatimundis we mistook for monkeys to crabs), and snacking between visits to the property’s restaurants.

Of the three eateries on site, top-rated Autor tickled us with its inventive, scrumptious bites: think ancestral Mexican cooking with global ingredients and a discernible nod to Asia. Chef Jersaí Miranda Sánchez authors his culinary pilgrimage on plates like bluefin tuna with fermented daikon and charred shrimp with quelites kimchi. As the confit brisket melted in our mouths, our palates became suspended in his stories.

You’ll be tempted to stuff yourself with the corn tamalli stuffed with short ribs and smoky chiltomate and arroz al horno, but practice restraint. The mole rosa, a raspberry and coconut textural playround, awaits.

As for the staff, the entire team exceeded our expectations with their warm personalities and expertise. When bartenders noticed our interest in tequila, we embarked on the most expansive mezcal tasting session of our lives. Lore posits that a lightning bolt struck an agave plant to produce mezcal, which about sums up our evening: electric.

After four days of noshing and nosying around the Conrad’s magical grounds, we were both completely elated, relaxed (a rare feat for Millennial workers)—and not ready to leave. We even uttered the unthinkable for intrepid travelers: “Let’s come back.”
