“Instead of getting caught up in a specific trend, I suggest taking cues from your (or your partner’s) style to inform what piece you’ll want to wear every day for the rest of your life,” says Jillian Sassone, the founder of Marrow Fine. She recommends asking yourself how you’ll feel about the ring in 10, 20, and even 30 years from now and considering if the design feels like an extension of yourself and your personal style.

If you do find yourself leaning toward one of these popular 2024 engagement ring trends, Sassone says there are a few things worth considering to ensure a more timeless appeal before pulling out your credit card. “Focus on the quality of the gemstone over the size or any elaborate design,” she notes. “A high-quality stone will maintain its value and beauty, regardless of changing trends.”

Unique Shaped Center Stones

According to Sassone, oval and round-shaped diamonds continue to reign at the most popular diamond shapes. However, there are a few subtle shifts this year. “We’re seeing an increased demand for more unique-shaped center diamonds, specifically marquise cuts,” she explains. These diamond shapes are historically linked to royalty and have elongated, pointy ends, which Sassone says can actually create the illusion of a larger stone. “Unlike round diamonds, marquise diamonds each have their own personality when it comes to proportions and length-to-width ratio,” she notes. “Plus, they’re incredibly versatile — a marquise diamond can be set north-south or east-west and looks amazing in botch prong and bezel setting.”

Antique Diamonds

Sassone says more and more of her clients are asking for old cuts, aka antique diamonds. “This is the perfect choice for those who don’t want a lab-grown diamond but want to avoid new mining,” she explains. Antique or vintage engagement rings tend to have more unique and intricate settings with a lot of soul, too. “I think there’s something really special about an antique diamond — the fact that each one was cut by hand years and years ago to maximize its glow in candlelight feels romantic,” Sassone adds, noting. Another reason antique diamonds are so special? No two are the same, which is something modern machinery can’t offer.
