What Should You Look for in Winter Boots?

“The perfect pair of winter boots combines an ideal fit, comfort, insulation, and winter-approved design elements. Boots in a proper fit allow you to wear thicker socks, while the cushioning and arch support make them comfortable enough to wear all day long,” shares Peter Martinez, Co-Founder and Fashion Stylist/Designer at Leather Skin Shop.

You should also look for boots with a sturdy outsole for good traction, as surfaces tend to be slippery during the cold weather. “The insulation level and material of the boots hold significance as this is what retains the heat, keeping your feet warm. For regular winter boots, 800-gram insulation works well, while you can go up to 1200-gram or more for snow and ice boots. Winter boots should ideally have streamlined silhouettes and clean lines (no fur trim or excessive buckles to trap the snow).”

Syretta Avent, Fashion Stylist and Marketing Manager of Firstline Brands, says you should always start at the soles and ensure they are good for wintry conditions. “Are they comfy and cute enough to survive holiday party hopping? If so, into my cart they go. I typically aim for flat boots, boots with a block heel, and boots with a very low stiletto heel (hello, kitten heel!), but the boots I select will always be stylish, event-appropriate, and weather-appropriate. Never sacrifice style for the weather.”

“Look for materials like leather, suede, or high-quality synthetics that can handle winter weather without sacrificing style. A rubber or textured sole adds traction, which is essential for colder, slippery days. If you want warmth and style, a slight heel like the Franco Sarto Jessica Bootie can work if it’s balanced with a non-slip sole,” says Lana Ashby Rowder, CEO/Founder of lookingGLASS.

How Do I Properly Care for Affordable Winter Boots?

As Martinez noted, buying affordable footwear means paying special attention to care and being consistent with the maintenance. “Make it a habit to use a leather conditioner on your winter leather boots every 2-3 weeks to prevent material breakdown due to dryness. Choose a good quality conditioner to ensure lasting results. Another tip is to use cedar shoe trees and acid-free paper to store the boots. This helps maintain the shape and look of your winter boots and avoids creasing for long, especially if you opted for mid-range budget footwear.”

Avent recommends maintaining winter boots by taking them to the shoe repair shop or cobbler. “I get a protectant spray when I purchase UGGs or any suede boots.”

“Start by waterproofing suede and leather boots with a protective spray—it’s essential for preventing water stains, especially on suede. Leather benefits from occasional conditioning to keep it from cracking,” says Rowder. “A quick wipe-down after wear prevents dirt buildup for textured options like the Ninety Union Via Bootie. Storing boots with tissue paper or inserts helps them keep their shape. Rotate your pairs to avoid excessive wear, and try to keep suede away from slushy days to maintain its look longer.”

What Are the Best Tips for Finding Deals on Quality Winter Boots?

“I would highly suggest buying winter boots during the off-season, as it’s possible to find steep discounts on fall and winter footwear in spring, or explore major online shopping platforms, such as Amazon, where you can check and compare boots from different sellers, and take advantage of the seasonal sales,” shares Martinez. Another tip he shared is to buy from outlet stores, as they typically offer products at lower prices than regular retail stores.

“Check the brand’s sizing guide and read reviews for insights on comfort and fit. Reading other customers’ reviews is the most helpful! Look for padded insoles and arch support—especially for all-day wear,” says Rowder. “Materials matter, too: leather and suede soften and stretch over time, while stiffer materials might need breaking in. Booties with a slightly rounded toe, like the Coconuts Legend Cowboy Boot , often provide more room and comfort.”
