Jill Clayburgh (1967-1975)
Jill Clayburgh, an accomplished actress in her own right, was one of Pacino’s earliest significant relationships. The pair met while both were up-and-coming actors in New York City’s theater scene. Their romance blossomed as they pursued their craft together, sharing the stage and their lives for nearly eight years until their split in 1975.
In a 1978 interview with The Washington Post, Clayburgh opened up about their breakup. “I went through it all. Self-loathing, loathing him, pain, anger, fear,” she shared. She attributed their split partly to Pacino’s skyrocketing fame following The Godfather. Despite the heartbreak, Clayburgh revealed she and Pacino were still on good terms. “We’re still friends; we see each other now and then,” she told the Post at the time.
