She might be starring and directing a film about the throes of being in a dating game show with a serial killer, but Anna Kendrick’s IRL love life was extremely complicated as well. The Pitch Perfect actress talked about her recent relationships and her future ahead when it comes to dating.
The Woman of the Hour director and star has gotten candid about how she wants to not have children in the future in an interview with Flow Space. When she explains the phrase “Yeah, a couple of kids running around!” that’s usually used by men, she expresses how women usually don’t think that and how it rubs her the wrong way. It “paints a certain visual” of a man returning home after a workday, making himself a cocktail, and moseying out into the backyard to discover his wife and children doing what? “Running around.”

“It’s like when I hear husbands say they want to ‘help out’ with the kids. And it’s two working parents!” she said. “And I always want to kind of say something, and then I’m just like, ‘Well, I’m the childless cat lady. I’m not gonna say shit.’
Anna Kendrick confirmed on Call Her Daddy that she’s single. After recounting her experiences in an abusive relationship, she said that she needs one thing from a man if she’ll ever be in a relationship in the future. “I’m never getting involved with a man — meaning we’re not even kissing, we’re not even going to have a real conversation — unless you are in or have been in therapy,” she said. The source said that the two seem really close as the couple “celebrated his birthday together in March” — and “she’s met his mom.”
“It doesn’t seem casual,” the source adds. “Anna’s very private, though. They enjoy date night at lowkey restaurants that are not your typical celeb hangouts.”
Anna Kendrick dated fellow comedian Bill Hader for four years. The duo co-starred in the 2019 Christmas film Noelle, and rumors about their relationship began to spread though both individuals kept quiet about their romance. Adding to this, the pandemic which made being out of the spotlight easier, the private couple was able to maintain privacy.
Prior to Noelle, a source told People that they met years ago on Saturday Night Live, but didn’t get together until well after the filming of their movie ended. Despite the secrecy, it was rumored that the pair were really happy, with Us Magazine even reporting that “they’re really into each other and make each other laugh – a lot.” It was also reported that Bill’s kids from his previous relationship bonded with Anna, and for their sake, he wanted to keep his relationship private. However, Hader and relationship was short-lived, and the pair broke up in June 2022.
In recent interviews, Anna Kendrick has been open about a seven-year relationship she had, in which she described as abusive. She was coming off an acclaimed role in Alice, Darling, which had very similar parallels to her real-life relationship. She never mentions her ex-boyfriend by name.
“I had just gotten out of a relationship that was extremely similar to the movie,” the actress shared during an episode of Call Her Daddy on October 22, 2024. “I didn’t want anybody to tell me to not do it. I didn’t want to get talked out of it.”
She talked about how her therapist “bought” his stories in couples therapy sessions. “I always felt like I was trying to stay so calm in couples therapy because I was like, f—, in these sessions, he’s so able to kind of stay calm in a way that he does not do when we’re outside of therapy,” the actress recalled. She also said at certain times, her ex would accuse her of terrorizing him. “I was just crying, because I couldn’t pretend that things were fine anymore,” she recalled. “I just started crying and he screamed in my face, ‘You’re terrorizing me.’ But it was truly from the place of a person who believed that they were being terrorized.”
“I was coming out of a personal experience with emotional abuse and psychological abuse,” she told People about coming out of the relationship to star in Alice, Darling. “I think my rep sent it to me, because he knew what I’d been dealing with and sent it along. Because he was like, ‘This sort of speaks to everything that you’ve been talking to me about.’ “
“It felt really distinct in that I had, frankly, seen a lot of movies about abusive or toxic relationships, and it didn’t really look like what was happening to me,” she adds. “It kind of helped me normalize and minimize what was happening to me, because I thought, ‘Well, if I was in an abusive relationship, it would look like that.’ “
Anna Kendrick was reportedly dating her Drinking Buddies costar Ben Richardson from 2014 to 2019. The two kept their relationship super private, but were often photographed together. When asked by The Sydney Morning Herald about her relationship status at the time she said, “Well, as far as keeping it private, it isn’t easy, as you are proving right now,” she told the outlet. “But that’s just always how it’s been for me.”
Anna Kendrick met Edgar Wright when they were filming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. She was a huge fan of the director and gushed about working with him in a Vanity Fair video in 2023. “I’ll be honest, when I first read this script, I was like, ‘I don’t totally get this. But I love Shaun of the Dead, I love Hot Fuzz.’ And I just wanted to work with Edgar Wright,” she said. “But I do remember [it] on paper being like, ‘I don’t know how this is gonna work, but I’m just gonna trust that he sees it’—which he did. It’s so awesome.”
Us Weekly confirmed the split in 2013, and the two are still good friends with Anna reprising her role as Stacey Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
