How to Find the Best Affordable Winter Coats, According to Stylists

I lived in New York City during five polar vortex winters and have visited Canada more than 30 times over the last decade, but last year was finally the year I bought a proper winter coat. And, not to sound dramatic, but: My life has forever changed. 

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and while I have owned warm coats in the past (I seriously would not have gotten through those NYC winters without one), they were never quite right. After years of styles that are too this and not enough that, I finally did a deep dive into the best affordable winter coats and looked for a style that was super warm, super comfortable, and super cute. Not only did I find it, but it didn’t cost nearly as much as I thought it would, considering how expensive some winter coats can get.

How to Find the Best Affordable Winter Coats

“When shopping for a winter coat, I advise my clients to invest in classic staples that will last for many seasons,” says Samantha Brown, a celebrity stylist and author of “Dressing Up: Pip’s Truly Fashionable Tale .” While some of the best winter coats come with high price tags, there are some mid-range and even budget-friendly styles that boast excellent value and will last you just as long. “If there’s a need to keep the budget tight, use your money wisely by choosing a versatile style with a structured fit that can be layered with many different types of outfits,” says Brown. She adds that asking yourself whether the coat can be worn for a couple of years rather than a single season will save you money in the long run and make investing in styles that are a tad closer to that mid-range mark well worth the investment. 

The good news is there are so many different winter coats out there, all at a variety of price points—so you don’t have to sacrifice quality for cost. “Finding a warm and functional coat on a budget is totally doable,” says Ramy Brook Sharp, founder and creative director of Ramy Brook. “Many stores offer down coats that provide excellent warmth while being budget-friendly.” 

Budget can be a bit subjective, though. And while some might want to splurge a bit more on a down puffer coat (especially those in super cold climates), others might prefer styles under $100. With that in mind, I scoured the internet—and tapped stylists—to find the best affordable winter coats, ranging from $40 to $400.
