If you don’t have a drugstore setting spray in your makeup bag, you’re missing out more than you know. Several popular setting sprays go for nearly $40, but we’re here to let you know that you don’t have to shell out that much coin on this essential step in your routine. In fact, according to the two makeup artists we spoke to, sometimes less is better.

The best drugstore setting sprays, per our experts, come from super affordable brands like NYX, Milani, and Pixi. Throw a little Flower Beauty and Physician’s Formula into the fold and you’ve got yourself a group of incredible options that work just like the cult-fave, TikTok-viral bottles but cost a fraction of the price.

Keep reading to learn about why you should mist a setting spray over your makeup and which formulas are best for your skin type and needs.

What is setting spray?

Setting spray helps to create an even finishing layer on top of your makeup that improves all-over look, staying power, and durability,” says makeup artist and co-founder of BAKEUP Beauty Jo Baker. This is important because you don’t want to ruin your beat when you take a phone call or accidentally touch your face. Setting spray will help preserve your makeup and make it last longer throughout the day.

When to apply setting spray

Both MUAs suggest using a setting spray after you finish creating your makeup look. “It should be the very last thing you do,” Baker says. However, you don’t necessarily have to apply setting spray every time you wear makeup. Makeup artist and beauty influencer Gregory Arlt says, “I wouldn’t recommend a setting spray for daily use, personally. I think they are great for prolonging the wear of makeup in the event of humid climates, for events, etc.”

What’s the difference between a setting spray and a setting powder

Arlt explains that a setting powder helps your foundation and cream-based products stay put; however, it can oftentimes have a heavier look and feel. Meanwhile, a setting spray provides anywhere from sheer to full coverage that absorbs right into the skin. Because each product serves different purposes, you can in fact use both. Baker recommends applying a setting powder wherever your skin tends to get extra shiny and then following that up by misting a setting spray all over your face. This will give your makeup the best shot at lasting throughout the day.
