What to Look for in a Blush

Blushes come in various formulas to suit different preferences and skin types, Lyn explains. “I personally love using a powder blush over top of a cream for extra long wear when I need my blush to stay put!”

Celebrity makeup artist Amanda Gabbard says to start by looking at the pigmentation. “This doesn’t mean bright and bold; the pigment should be strong enough yet light enough to blend and achieve an even application,” she says.

Next, consider the formulation. Do you prefer a cream or powder blush? Or do you want a multi-taking product that works on the cheeks and lips? Regardless of preference, it should blend easily and enhance a natural glow.

Shade range is another key feature to take note of when shopping for a blush. “As with all cosmetic products, a diverse shade range that compliments all different skin tones and undertones is super important,” Gabbard explains. “As a makeup artist, I rarely use bright pink blush. I combine peachy rose neutrals on the majority of my clients.”

Lastly, other factors to look for in a blush are “clean ingredients and lightweight, convenient packing,” according to Gabbard.

How to Apply Blush

“I tell my clients that no matter what skin type they have, blush is the first makeup product to fade,” Gabbard tells StyleCaster. “Whether you have oily, dry or combination skin — the cheek area absorbs product faster than any other.  This is why prepping and priming of the skin (as with all makeup applications) is extremely important.” Once you prep the skin and apply your other face products, let them set.

Lyn says the next vital step is selecting the proper tool. Both Gabbard and Lyn prefer using a stippling brush, but you can also apply the product with a sponge or clean fingers.

“I like to take a brush and swirl it around in powder and tap onto the cheeks for a powder formula,” explains Miami-based makeup artist Natalie Dresher. “For a liquid formula, I like to dot some onto the cheeks and then stipple it into the skin with a brush.” Cream blushes are also a breeze to apply. “For a cream product I like to warm it up on the back of my hand and then tap it into the cheeks using a beauty sponge to blend out any harsh lines,” Dresher adds.

How to Pick the Best Blush for Your Skin Tone

Below is a helpful guide to the best shades for your specific skin type, according to the pros.

Medium Skin Tones: Seek warm rosy shades, mauve/pink, and peach.
Fair Skin Tones: Think light soft peaches, corals, and pinks.
Deep Skin Tones: Gabbard says for deeper skin tones “the richer the better, terra cotta, berry, burnt
orange, plum, or mauve.”
Oily Skin: “Old school classic powder blush is great for those with oily skin, even if you’re combination, you’ll need to finish with a powder blush,” Gabbard explains.
Dry Skin: Cream blush is the way to go for oily skin since these formulas are hydrating and really blend into the skin, leaving a silky finish behind.
