Blake Lively, who plays Lily Bloom in the new Colleen Hoover adaptation, It Ends With Us, has set forth in a series of flowery dresses and outfits as part of her method dressing. She’s playing a woman who has always dreamt of owning a flower shop, by the way.

I have thoughts about this, all of which are unrelated to this apparent drama that swept the Internet between her and her male lead/director Justin Baldoni. Mainly I honestly didn’t notice that all her outfits were all about flowers because, to be honest, that’s kind of unremarkable. A lot of clothes have flowers on them. If my editor hadn’t pointed out to me that she was doing something tied to the movie, I would legitimately have not noticed.

Blake Lively gets a lot of shit for her outfits. She very famously does not work with a professional stylist and, instead, opts to dress herself. I mean, I do think some of it is unfair, like she usually looks fine, and her clothes, while not Captial F Fashion or Capital S Style, are pretty. But the fact that she doesn’t have a professional ear to the ground in the fashion space helping her out and studying the landscape full time does show, I have to admit. Flowers are really just not that special of a motif for it to stand out, the way that perhaps Barbie’s looks or the tennis looks for the Challengers press look turned out.
