The trailer of Netflix’s Maestro was released on August 15, 2023, and Bradley Cooper’s nose is causing up a stir on social media.

The romantic biographical film is centered around the life of world-renowned composer, co-creator of West Side Story, and longtime New York Philharmonic conductor Leonard Bernstein (played by Bradley Cooper) and his wife Felicia Montealegre (played by Carey Mulligan). Bernstein was the child of Jewish immigrants from present-day Ukraine. During the first look of the movie, many social media users called out Cooper’s use of a prosthetic nose as antisemitic.

Many people called out Bradley Cooper of “Jewface” since the actor is not Jewish and he is portraying a Jewish man. It’s the latest in Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, with actress Helen Mirren called out for her portrayal of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in Guy Nattiv’s Golda.

Cooper also directed and produced Maestro. The film also stars Maya Hawke as their daughter Jamie, Sam Nivola as their son Alexander, and Alexa Swinton as their daughter Nina. Additional cast members include Matt Bomer, Sarah Silverman, Gideon Glick, Michael Urie and Miriam Shor. The film will premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2, and it will be the spotlight gala film at New York Film Festival on October 2, 2023. The movie will then have a limited theatrical window starting Nov. 22 before hitting Netflix on December 20, 2023.

Sarah Silverman has spoken about Jewish representation in media and how non-Jews consistently play Jews on screen. “In a time when the importance of representation is seen as so essential and so front and center, why does ours constantly get breached even today in the thick of it?” Silverman asked.
