It’s pretty typical in the entertainment business to have actors play characters much younger than them (Grease was famously criticized for having full-blown 30-year-olds trying to pass as teenagers). But the Bridgerton siblings‘ ages are actually pretty in line with the actors who play them, except for one.

The show Bridgerton, based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling book series of the same name, is set in the competitive world of Regency London’s high society and centers on the Bridgerton family, an upscale English clan that consists of Lady Violet; her four sons, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, and Gregory; and her four daughters, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, and Hyacinth. The series, which has been described as Gossip Girl meets Pride and Prejudice, is set during social season when debutantes are presented at court.

“What confuses me is Daphne and Eloise’s ages,” one fan wrote on Reddit. Colin would’ve been about 20 in the first season, which would make Daphne either 19 or 18 depending on how far apart they are. In the first season, it is said that Violet put off Eloise’s debut for a year, which means she is now of age. But, the show also frames this as Daphne’s debut too, so why would they be debuting at the same time?”

They continued: “If Daphne was 18, why would Eloise, at 17 or 16 again depending on how many years apart they are, be debuting too? If Daphne was 19, why did she wait so long to debut if the age to debut is lower, and again the show frames it as her first year out? Am I tripping and have missed something?”

While the age of some of these characters might be shocking considering a (very watered down) premise of the show—that is, women finding husbands—just remember that in the Regency era, people married young, so the Bridgerton siblings‘ ages are more or less true to history.
