Variety shows are often a form of escapism for any type of fan. (Personally, I put episodes of Run BTS in the background whenever I need a hefty laugh.)  It amplifies idols’ fun and silly behaviors that aren’t often seen in their musical lore. Like a very special fan meet, Jin puts the audience in their own spotlight and center stage. 

One of the activities that mimicked a variety show concept was where Jin had to guess his own song while ARMY was singing the lyrics back to him. The prize? Jin wore a themed outfit (a camper, student, and pilot were the choices) corresponding to how many he got right. It was definitely a challenge for the audience. When the lyrics of the first song, “To you, Today,” popped up on the screen, the audience was perplexed yet enthusiastic. It audibly got quieter when the Korean and romanized lyrics were displayed, but when the English lyrics came on, the audience was dialed up to a 10. Jin’s expression remained confused the whole entire time, and he quipped, “All I heard was your laughter guys.” 

The punishment if he gets it wrong? His head is hit with a metal plate, which he conceded to after failing to guess the first song. The audience was confident enough to sing the BTS classic “Go Go” back to him, but he still was pretty unsure, and said, “I feel like we’re fair to each other guys. As much as I don’t know how to speak English, you all don’t know how to speak Korean.” The whole banter felt like catching up with a close old friend. After only getting one of the songs right, Jin had to dress like a pilot. In the meantime, it was ARMY karaoke session where Jin chose the song through a spinning wheel. Though “Magic Shop” seemed like everyone’s favorite, the wheel stopped at “The Astronaut.” The graphics were reminiscent of a classic noraebang projection, with Jin encouraging the crowd to sing with silly movements and campy transitions. Immediately after, Jin struck a pose in the pilot costume and dived into the viral hit “Super Tuna,” a song about his huge affection for fishing.

Worldwide Handsome Stuns on the Extended Stage

Speaking of outfits, Jin first emerged on stage to commence the concert with a sparkly Canadian tuxedo to hit the ground running with none other than the lead single “Running Wild” from his first solo album Happy. Inside his glammed-out denim jacket designed by Gucci (he was named ambassador last year) was a graphic tee with his name and a heart surrounding it. Expected nothing less from the person who spreads the gospel about self-love!

When it came to the third act, he leaned into a more country look that was inspired by his song “Rope It” from his second album Echo. He donned a slick black cowboy shirt and hat, alongside a belt that glamorously spells out his name. The outfit spilled into an infectious twang, and he led the audience to make a “roping it in” motion with their ARMY Bombs.

Heartfelt Songs & a Surprise Shred

Jin took center stage on a solo piano succession of songs from “I will come to you” and the emotional “Abyss” showcasing a side of vulnerability as a songwriter. The mood gradually grew with the wrenching “Another Level” and “Heart on the Window (feat. Wendy)” before exploding into the highly explosive “Loser (feat. Yena).”

From one instrument to another, Jin took his guitarist’s guitar and slowly and successfully played the riff to “Loser” to which the crowd roared with glee.

An Emotional BTS Medley

So far, three out of the seven BTS members have performed a medley of their popular songs at their solo tours. For Jin, it started out with their chart topping “Dynamite” and smoothly transitioned into “Butter.” It got a little more sentimental when “Mikrokosmos” and “Spring Day” tugged the heartstrings of everyone in Prudential Center. In that moment, Jin wasn’t alone and recordings of his bandmates were sprinkled throughout.   

The medley was a little taste before the group releases new music next year. Jin was visibly excited about what they have in store and told the audience that he puts his whole trust into the members for their music.

A Major in Moon?

As the night wound down, Jin reappeared on stage during the encore with a rendition of his self-loving anthem “Epiphany” leading the crowd to collectively sing the affirmation “I’m the one I should love in this world.” Fans caught on that during his penultimate song “Moon,” he goes into the crowd and let’s them sing the intro “oohs.” One fan made a sign that said that she majored in Moon and asked her what she worked in, and she responded, “Moon.” When she sang, Jin playfully reacted, “I don’t think you majored in Moon.” No one was spared from Jin handing someone a mic as he asked a working security guard to sing the part, and the crowd was overall impressed. 

As his last song, he revisited the song that he incorrectly got wrong during the skit and this time, it was met with more fervor. A fitting song for a send off to help make all those two hours memorable to each individual audience member: “Let me fly away with you, nobody else / What do you say? / Only one today, to me.”
