Building the Band
Netflix

Building the Band recruited the biggest names in boy band and girl band history for their show. The new Netflix singing competition brings 50 contestants to form the next big name in music. The catch? They can’t see each other for the duration of the contest.

The show was filmed a couple of months before Liam Payne’s untimely death. The One Direction member served as a guest judge for later episodes. The show received Payne’s family’s blessing to go ahead and air on the streaming site. Host AJ McLean said in the inaugural episode that the show was dedicated to Liam Payne and his family.

“We both were living a parallel life,” McLean told Rolling Stone about their time on set. “There was a lot of funny boy-band jabs that we would take at each other. He really had a quick wit to him — that nice, dry, British humor.”
