Mike Fisher (2008 – Present)
After a string of high-profile relationships, it was a simple backstage introduction that would change Carrie’s life forever. In 2008, her bassist Mark Childers had an idea: he wanted to introduce her to NHL player Mike Fisher. The timing seemed less than ideal—her career was soaring, and he was playing hockey in another country. As Carrie later confessed on VH1’s Behind the Music, “I mean, can I make dating more difficult? Let’s get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome.”
But that fateful meet-and-greet at one of her concerts proved that sometimes timing doesn’t matter when it’s right. After meeting Fisher, Carrie fired off an excited text to Childers declaring him “hot, hot, hot,” while Fisher was equally smitten, later admitting that Carrie was “even more beautiful in person than on TV.”
What followed was a long-distance romance that would put any relationship to the test, with Carrie in Nashville and Mike playing for the Ottawa Senators in Canada. But distance only made their connection stronger. As Carrie told Glamour in 2012, “Any guy I’ve ever dated, there would always be that doubt… I’m not the crazy-girlfriend type, but there was a little voice in the back of my head. I don’t have to worry about Mike. I don’t think twice. He’s going out? I don’t care; it doesn’t bother me. I don’t bat an eye.”
The fairy tale continued when Fisher proposed at his home in December 2009 with a canary yellow diamond ring designed by Jonathan Arndt—featuring a five-carat center stone surrounded by smaller diamonds, according to Brides. Their July 10, 2010, wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation in Georgia was everything a country music princess could dream of. Carrie wore not one but two Monique Lhuillier creations—a ceremony gown that the designer said fulfilled Carrie’s wish for “something grand and magical,” followed by a strapless cocktail dress for the reception. Their wedding planner, Jayne Bubis, revealed the couple’s down-to-earth priorities to People, telling the magazine, “They wanted a laid-back environment where everybody could be together and have a good time. It wasn’t about having celebrities; Carrie and Mike don’t care about that stuff. They wanted the closest people who meant the most to them.”
In 2020, the couple gave fans an intimate look into their relationship through their four-part documentary series, Mike and Carrie: God & Country. The show explored their journey together, including their different perspectives and parenting challenges. As producer Jonah Ingram told Entertainment Tonight, “You get to hear Carrie and Mike look right into the lens and share meaningful moments of their life.” Now parents to sons Isaiah and Jacob, Carrie and Mike continue to prove that sometimes the best relationships start with taking a leap of faith!
