She’s the popstar of the century in our eyes. Chappell Roan has basked in pop stardom and now she’s taking a spin on country. Her new single “The Giver” shows how as a lover she’ll “get the job done” and that “only women know how to treat women right.”
Chappell Roan is known for her sapphic upbeat songs and has cemented her place as a queer icon. But to her, she grasps the regular everyday problem of dealing with a crush. “I sleep for a long time on the bus, but I’ve been talking to this girl that I have a crush on, so I don’t sleep anymore,” she told Bowen Yang in an Interview piece. “It’s my favorite part of life, having a crush on someone. It’s the best thing ever when you are at the beginning of a relationship and talking on FaceTime for eight hours a day.”

Chappell Roan revealed she was in a relationship in an interview with Call Her Daddy. She revealed that the relationship is “serious” and she’s “very in love.” She met her current girlfriend through a mutual friend but “it wasn’t a setup” and that she was the one to make the first move. “I’m usually the one who makes [the first move],” she said, “like in every circumstance, I make the first move.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Chappell did mention that she was seeing a girl who she got along with, but can’t really be pinned down to commitments just yet. “I met this girl that I really like, but [I] can’t commit because I feel like no one understands me. I don’t want to date another artist because they’re fucking nuts. I’m so avoidant because I’m just like, ‘She’ll never get me. She’ll never get it.’ ”
The outlet reported that the girl is “completely outside the industry.” “She’s so awesome and so secure in herself and [has told me] ‘No pressure, we can just be friends if you want,’ ” Roan says. “I’m just running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I’m just like, ‘What? I can’t get married!’ It is that type of delusion right now.”
Chappell opened up to The Los Angeles Times about how she was dating a girl at the time and was afraid to show her to the world. “I feel scared kissing her in public,” she shared. “Even though I’m in L.A., homophobia is in the back of my head. It’s liberating, but there’s a new set of problems that I didn’t know existed.”
During her 2024 Coachella performance, she dedicated her song “My Kink Is Karma” to an ex. “I wrote this after the worst breakup I’ve ever had. I really felt like we would be together forever. But it honestly couldn’t have ended worse. So I ended up writing this about how I feel now.”
Chappell confessed that she dated a boy when she was writing her hits “Red Wine Supernova” and “Naked in Manhattan.” “I was dating a boy then,” she told The Los Angeles Times in August 2023. “I had never even kissed a girl when these songs were written. It was all what I wished my life could be.”
She told Teen Vogue about how her experiences at The Abbey which inspired “Pink Pony Club” helped her figure out her queerness after breaking up with a partner of four and a half years. “[Dating a boy is] just literally not fun,” she reflects now. “It’s not fun. It’s not hot. It’s not interesting. It’s boring.”
