A couch can make or break a room. Place a dull couch in an otherwise gorgeous space, and it’ll surely drag down the room’s aura. Although, the same is true for the opposite. A beautiful couch in an otherwise drab area can carry the space to new heights.

Just like the clothes in our closets, furniture also has trend cycles. They don’t seem to shift as drastically as the trend cycles of shoes, but they change enough every few years that you should consider doing your research on the latest styles. (You definitely don’t want to buy a couch that’ll age your home!)

It can be overwhelming to shop for anything these days, furniture included. If you think about it though, finding the perfect couch is a bit like finding a romantic partner—it may take a bit of time, as well as some trial and error. If you take what we’ve learned from dating, we also know that looks aren’t everything. A beautiful couch with no lumbar support is probably not the one. What’s the point of buying a pretty couch that won’t do you any favors for your back?

“Coziness is essential when selecting a couch,” says Aino Heinäsuo, Head of Design at Redecor. “After a long workday, we want a space where we can curl up and relax. This means looking for comfortable cushions and sufficient seating depth. If the couch isn’t deep enough, it can hinder your ability to truly unwind and lift your feet, leaving you with a formal, upright sitting position that doesn’t encourage relaxation. A deeper couch invites a more laid-back experience, making it the perfect spot to unwind.”

Aside from aesthetics and comfort, another important priority is choosing a couch that will last through the ever-changing trend cycles. That way, you won’t feel the need to buy a new couch when the next trend hits the market. Heinäsuo shared several ways to balance trendiness and timelessness, so don’t stress about this too much. “For those who love bold colors, I recommend choosing a couch with changeable covers,” she says. “This option allows you to easily refresh the look of your couch as trends shift or your personal preferences evolve.”

She adds, “Investing in a quality couch is wise, as these pieces often remain in demand with new color options regularly introduced to the market, ensuring their resale value holds up well. When it comes to the shape of the couch, I wouldn’t stress too much; they tend to be long-lasting. Instead, I suggest focusing on high-quality textures, colors, and construction. Prioritizing these elements ensures that your couch not only looks great but also stands the test of time, making it a worthwhile investment for your space.”

Do with that info what you will. In the meantime, we’ve rounded up three couch trends that will dominate furniture stores in 2025.
