We all know football is a physical sport—athletes put their bodies on the line week in, week out. But Damien Harris’ injury was a scary reminder of how badly things can go, even with all their protective gear and the rules of the game.

Harris was born on February 11, 1997, in Richmond, Kentucky. He played college football for the University of Alabama and was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round—87th overall—of the 2019 NFL Draft, making his professional debut in the team’s Week 7 33–0 victory over the New York Jets, rushing for 12 yards on four carries. It would be his only display, however, as he was a healthy scratch for most of his rookie year. As he matured, though, Harris’ skills were well demonstrated with several 100+ yard games and a handful of touchdowns in the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons, and signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills in 2023.

In his three seasons as a professional football player, Damien Harris’ injury record has been pretty minor—a broken finger here, a hamstring tear there—but on October 15, 2023, teammates and fans watched on as a scary incident unfolded in front of their eyes.
