Why is Deshaun Watson out for the season?
Why is Deshaun Watson out for the season? The Cleveland quarterback suffered two injuries on Sunday, November 12, 2023, in their 33-31 win against the Baltimore Ravens—an ankle injury as well as his throwing shoulder.
Here’s the full statement from the Browns: “Deshaun Watson underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Monday on two injuries sustained on different plays in the first half of Sunday’s 33-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Imaging on his left ankle revealed a high-ankle sprain. In addition, postgame, Deshaun notified our medical staff of a new discomfort in his right shoulder that he felt after a hit in the first half. An MRI of his right shoulder revealed a displaced fracture to the glenoid.”
“Despite performing at a high level and finishing the game, after consultation with Browns’ Head Physician, James Voos, MD, and industry-leading shoulder specialist, Neal ElAttrache, MD, it has been determined that this injury will require immediate surgical repair to avoid further structural damage. Deshaun will be placed on season-ending injured reserve and a full recovery is expected for the start of the 2024 season.”
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Watson “wanted to be shot up” in a desperate appeal to play through the injuries, but was told after multiple medical opinions that “if he got hit again in the same spot, the shoulder could fall apart.” Pelissero tweeted that Watson said: “I pushed very hard for it. All the doctors and experts said there was no chance.”
After receiving the news that he would need surgery, Watson told reporters: “I still can’t believe it. Like I said, I’m still just trying to process the information that I’ve been getting since last night. And it’s tough, you know, I’ve felt like we were turning a corner to really make a run and I still believe we still will with the guys in this locker room, I just wanted to be physically a part of it.
