Al Pacino Still ‘Shaken’ by Diane Keaton’s Death Amid Claims She Was the ‘Love of His Life’—All Her Exes Who’ve Mourned Her

Steve Jobs (1980)

Diane Keaton almost dated Steve Jobs. The actress recalled on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show about how she fumbled the bag. “I really didn’t go out with him… no, I did not kiss him, but here’s what happened: I lived at the San Remo in New York City, and it was a building with two towers. And Steve Jobs had just bought the top three floors of the north tower. So this was after Annie Hall and he was interested in meeting me.”

She added, “So I go over to his tower and it’s like amazing… He starts talking, but all he’s talking about is this thing. The computer thing, you know? How the computer was gonna take over the world. I’m sitting there going ‘okay, right’. And he’s talking about how everybody was going to have a computer for their world and their life and their homes and I’m going ‘yeah, right right.’ and I never saw him again, ever. Because, obviously, I just wasn’t prepared for that for even a second.”

The star regretted the decision over the years. “Can you imagine? What an idiot I was.”

Ed Ruscha (1977)

Several publications like the New Yorker noted that Ed Ruscha dated Diane Keaton, but unlike her other relationships, this relationship was kept under wraps.

Warren Beatty (1978 – 1983)

In the period when she and Al Pacino were broken up, Diane Keaton dated Warren Beatty. “The first time I saw Warren was in ‘Splendor in the Grass’ ” in 1961, Keaton told Variety in 2016. “He was, I mean, to die for. A dream. … Not only was he beautiful, gorgeous and sexy and captivating and mysterious and a great movie star, but he was also an unbelievable producer and director.”

The two starred in Reds together, and remained amicable even after their breakup. Beatty told People, “She’s a combination of integrity and humor and intelligence and fairness and, did I say beauty? A brilliant comedic sense.” 

Al Pacino (1974 – 1990)

Diane Keaton dated her co-star on The Godfather, Al Pacino, two years after the film premiered. The pair had an on-and-off again relationship, but it ultimately ended because she gave him an ultimatum of marrying her or not. She wrote in her memoir, Then Again, saying: “For me, the Godfathers, all three of them, were about one thing — Al. It was as simple as that. He never had any intention of marrying me… I wanted more, lots more. Tons. I wanted him to want me as much as I wanted him.”

The two remained friendly after the breakup and the actor reacted to her death. “When I first heard the news, I was shaken,” Pacino said to Deadline. “Diane was my partner, my friend, someone who brought me happiness and, on more than one occasion influenced the direction of my life. Though over thirty years has past since we were together, the memories remain vivid, and with her passing, they have returned with a force that is both painful and moving.”

“She lived without limits, and everything she touched carried her unmistakable energy,” Pacino said. “She opened doors for others, inspired generations, and embodied a once-in-a-lifetime gift that radiated through her work and her life. On screen, she was magnetic – lightning and charm, hurricanes and tenderness. She was a wonder. Acting was her art, but it was only one of the many ways she expressed her imagination and creativity.”

Woody Allen (1968 – 1972)

Diane Keaton had an off-screen relationship with Annie Hall co-star and director Woody Allen from 1968 to 1972.

The two met after the actress auditioned for Allen’s play “Play it Again, Sam,” and they hit it off pretty quickly. In his memoir, he wrote that his first impressions of Keaton were “adorable, funny, totally original in style, real, fresh.”

It was largely speculated that Annie Hall was about their relationship, to which Keaton told The New York Times, “It’s not true, but there are elements of truth in it.”

The two broke up in 1972 but remained very friendly. Keaton had defended Allen when his ex-wife Mia Farrow accused him of sexually abusing their child, Dylan, and during backlash when his relationship with Soon-yi Previn came into light. “Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him,” Keaton wrote. “It might be of interest to take a look at the 60 Minutes interview from 1992 and see what you think.”

Keaton praised Allen, telling The Guardian, “He’s the strongest person I’ve met in my life. He’s made of steel. And talk about a work ethic — he’s one of the people that really did teach me that you have to work hard. But he wanted to. He’s the most disciplined person I’ve known, with the exception of my dad.”

At the time of the news breaking, Allen was said to be ‘extremely distraught and surprised and upset’ over the shock news of Keaton’s death, an insider told People. 

The source further told the outlet that Allen ‘appreciated her very much’ and was also not aware of her declining health.
