The curtains tweet
Some of Harvey’s tweets to Gadd were repeated, almost verbatim, in the dialogue and messages that featured in episodes. The “curtains” tweet is one such example. On September 23, 2014, Harvey tweeted at Gadd: “@MrRichardGadd my curtains need hung badly”.
In the show, Donny’s friends tease him about his relationship with Martha, and the frequency of her presence in his bar becomes a bit of a joke. “Aren’t you going to introduce us to your girlfriend?” one of his mates quips. “When are you two going to shag?” says another. To deflect their teasing, Donny says he doesn’t believe in sex before marriage.
But Martha says to Donny that she’s “marriage material”. She’s “just bought a penthouse, furnished. All I need now is for someone to hang my curtains,” she says. Donny observes in a voice-over that “hang her curtains” “sounded vaguely sexual” and that he “hated lowering himself to” his friend’s level, but “I just needed a way out of that painfully awkward situation.” Speaking to Martha, he says: “I’ll hang your curtains.”
