It’s been a huge 12 months in film and television and as the awards season rolls around again, everyone is keen to see Golden Globes Best Actress winners because there are just so many talented female leads who have been given the nod.
The Golden Globe Awards was started in 1944 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as a way to recognize the best of the best in both American and international movies and television. Presented each year around January, the Golden Globes often mark the start of awards season, which typically ends with the Academy Awards—or Oscars—in late February or early March. The Golden Globes trophy, which was most recently redesigned in 2009, is a gold and marble statuette of a gold globe on top of a gold pillar.
The awards show was aired on NBC until 2023 when airing rights were transferred to CBS. In recent years, the award show was criticized for the lack of diversity and ethical practices of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Boycotts occurred and NBC opted not to air the 2022 awards show. The Globes has worked to expand its membership, clean up its guidelines and has reorganized itself as a for-profit entity, after the HFPA was wound down and its assets were sold to Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge (both of which are owned by StyleCaster’s parent company Penske Media).
Leading the nominations for film is 2023’s smash box-office hit Barbie. Oppenheimer came in second, with eight nominations, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven each. Netflix led all film distributors with 13 total noms, followed by Warner Bros. Pictures with 12.

Golden Globe Best Actress in a Drama Movie winner predictions, according to Golden Derby, has Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon at 17/5 odds. They were right, Lily Gladstone got her first Golden Globe Ever, to which she got a standing ovation.
She opened her speech with a few sentences spoken in Siksikáí’powahsin, aka Blackfoot language. “I love everyone in this room right now,” she then said in English. “I hope I’m not counted down too fast because this is a historic win. I’m so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language, which I’m not fluent in. … I’m holding [this award] with all my beautiful sisters.”
In Roger Ebert’s review of the film, they wrote: “Gladstone will be the revelation for most people. The standout of Certain Women knows exactly how to play this role, never leaning into melodrama and always grounding her character in the truth of the moment instead of playing a stand-in for all Indigenous victims. There are times when it feels like “Killers of the Flower Moon” could spin out into a broader political statement, but the performances, especially Gladstone’s, keep the film in the truth of character.”
Golden Globe Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Movie winner predictions, according to GoldDerby, is Emma Stone for Poor Things at 10/3 odds. And indeed, she did win.
“I think this is a rom-com. I see this as a rom-com, but in the sense of — Bella falls in love with life itself rather than a person. And she accepts the good and the bad in equal measure. And that really made me look at life differently and that all of it counts and all of it is important. And she has stayed with me deeply,” she said in her acceptance speech.
In a review of the film, the New York Times praised Stone’s performance: She “builds her performance so discreetly — with words, gestures and footfalls that stagger and halt only to then seamlessly flow together — that it can seem as if all the changes Bella experiences were emanating from deep within the character, not the actor.”
