Given recent media, Wednesday Addams is the obvious choice, and I love that girl down. A goth freak with a Peter Pan collar and weird vibes? That was me in a past life, and sometimes now. But Wednesday is no one if not her mother’s daughter, and Morticia is an image of glamour. First of all, she’s got a husband who’s completely obsessed with her (deserved), long flowing hair, a makeup look that requires commitment to a vibe, and sex appeal forever. She’s made to be copied. She also comes with a built-in couple’s costume.

One thing about television is that a lot of these really great characters have so many recognizable outfits. This is one of my faves of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘s Hilary Banks. She’s a total diva in the show, but that’s not what makes her a style icon. She’s got the most perfect curls, killer style every time, and if you go as her, you have a perfect excuse to go vintage shopping.
Mia Wallace, Pulp Fiction (1994)

I almost went as Mia Wallace this year, decided on something lazier. But anyway. She’s a great character to dress as if you want a slutty costume or if you want a regular one. The thing that makes this great is that you probably already have all the things you need for the clothes. You may need to get a wig and a cig (optional, I guess…), and maybe some fake blood if you’re trying to do That Scene.
Patrick Bateman, American Psycho (2000)

He’s no hero, but Patrick Bateman is, as far as fictional characters go, an American icon. This costume is not just for guys. Get your best blue suit and best red tie, a toy axe, and maybe clear rain parka, and you’re set. You can repurpose most of these clothes for a wedding later.
Elle Woods, Legally Blonde, (2001)

I pray to god the reboot machine leaves Legally Blonde alone because I just don’t know how you can compete with HER. I’ve said this before, but if they were to write a book on the color pink, Elle Woods would need her own chapter. This costume seems straightforward, but it does require some thought. A wig, a full ensemble in the right shade of pink, and a chihuahua.

This is the movie that put Anne Hathaway, legend, icon, American beauty on the public map, so let’s be serious about its cultural impact. So you have options here. You could go with pre-princessification (school uniform, pre-makeover), post-princessification where she still has her uniform, OR you could straight up do Mia Thermopolis, Princess of Genovia, gown, tiara and all.

If you’re too young to know all the references you hear about a blonde beauty named Michelle Pfeiffer, that’s okay, it’s never too late to learn. Scarface is a movie from the ’80s, but Elvira is forever. When you google this movie, you’ll see pictures of Elvira’s iconic teal dress, her beautiful blond bob, and a cigarette in hand.
