Holiday season is almost upon us, and while many of us are filling our online carts with sparkly dresses, statement coats, and eye-catching footwear, there’s another category that deserves attention: hair. Accessories and apparel get all the love at Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas parties, and New Year’s Eve celebrations—but how you wear your strands is just as important. A unique coiffure can make or break an outfit, adding that finishing touch that screams festive and fun.

Deciding what to do with your hair amid an extremely busy time can be a daunting task—but it doesn’t have to be if you have some inspo! When I’m stumped on how to give my tresses a refresh for a special occasion, I turn to the runways. During fashion week, the hottest labels out of New York, Paris, London, Milan, and beyond sent models down the catwalk rocking updos, blowouts, and slicked-back ponytails dreams are made of. Take Ashi Studio, for example. For the fall/winter 2024 show, models donned glossy ballerina buns. While the ‘do is no new phenomenon, when paired with glitter, ruffles, and feathers, it feels fresh and bold. The style is sleek and chic, but doesn’t take away from the glam or clothes.

To me, the pulled-back look, which for whatever reason has been dubbed the style of the “clean girl aesthetic,” is the easiest to try at home. It’s actually my go-to lazy-day ‘do because I have extremely thick curly hair. To avoid any breakage or damage, don’t try this style on wet hair because pulling it too tight can put too much pressure on your strands and scalp. Instead, start with a old hair (like an old silk press), pull it back into a ponytail, slick down your edges and remaining hair with a product like Eco Styler and Fenty Hair’s The Gelly Type and smooth it out to your liking with a boar bristle brush and an edge tool. Then, twist the pony at the base of the hair tie, and you’re all set! If you want some extra pizazz you can add some sparkling shine mist or glitter.
