House of the Dragon Season 3 Spoilers: Who Will Die & Who Will Survive?

The Dance of the Dragons truly began in House of the Dragon Season 2, despite some of the main characters’ efforts to avoid sending the dragons to war and the subsequent slaughter. Yet more political turmoil and fiery destruction await in Season 3. In future episodes, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen may find herself less inclined to reclaim the Iron Throne with as little carnage as possible when the war has cost her dearly.

House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers

The story will again bring her face-to-face with her former friend Queen Alicent Hightower, the mother of King Aegon II, Rhaenyra’s half-brother and her main competition for the throne. While George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood is the most dependable source for House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers, the changes the show has already made to the source material suggest certain events may play out differently on screen. Last chance to avoid major House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers as we explain what could happen next season based on the books.

The Battle of the Gullet Results in Jace’s Death

In Season 2, Aemond Targaryen proposes allying with the Triarchy of Essos to finally break the Velaryon blockade, meaning the Battle of Gullet is coming soon. This battle has been hinted at throughout the sophomore season and constitutes several of the most devastating House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers. Beforehand, the ship carrying Rhaenyra’s two youngest sons to Pentos is taken by the Triarchy’s fleet. Aegon escapes on Stormcloud, but the dragon is wounded and dies shortly after they make it back to Dragonstone. Viserys is taken captive and presumed dead by the Blacks. Given Stormcloud’s size in the show, it is possible Joffrey is traveling with them and he and Aegon escape on Tyraxes. Rhaenyra’s eldest son Jaecerys and the newly recruited dragonriders then fly into battle, but the Triarchy has experience fighting dragons. Jace and his dragon Vermax are killed, while the other dragons cause massive amounts of death and destruction.
Hugh and Ulf Betray The Blacks

Season 2 introduces Hugh Hammer and Ulf White, two of the “smallfolk” suffering the consequences of the war in King’s Landing. In Fire & Blood, Both are the bastard sons of unknown Targaryens—although the show is more specific about their parentage—and are therefore able to claim the dragons Vermithor and Silverwing, as House of the Dragon depicts. Hugh, Ulf, Nettles, and Addam of Hull are known as “dragonseeds,” all bastards with Valyrian blood who serve as Rhaenyra’s dragonriders and fight for her in the Battle of the Gullet. However, Hugh and Ulf defect at the First Battle of Tumbleton (where Hugh’s wife may be staying with family), resulting in a major victory for the Greens and sowing lethal discord among the Blacks.
Aemond and Alys Have a Relationship

Watching the beguiling Alys Rivers, the so-called Witch of Harrenhal, mess with Daemon Targaryen this season has been great. However, the dynamic between her and Daemon’s rival Aemond will be just as riveting. Aemond takes back Harrenhal and kills the remaining members of House Strong for supporting the Blacks; however, he spares Alys and they become lovers. Like Daemon, Aemond may be fazed by Alys at first. However, both are intriguingly shrewd characters and Aemond will probably soon realize that Alys is potentially a powerful ally. After the war, Alys claims to be Aemond’s widow and that her son is the rightful heir to the throne. She keeps Harrenhal for herself through a loyal militia of outlaws and her own mysterious power, giving rise to more harrowing tales about the castle.
Daeron Rides into Battle

Gwayne Hightower’s description of his nephew Daeron Targaryen is interesting because it presents Daeron as the only one of Alicent’s sons who is a decent person. However, Daeron will soon cause more deaths in the war. In the final episodes of the season, the Greens mention that Daeron and his dragon Tessarion are ready for battle. Dragon and rider arrive at the Battle of the Honeywine to save the force led by Ormund Hightower from certain defeat; he participates in other battles after this. Daeron’s arrival at a major battle might be the first time the audience actually sees him, making for a dramatic entrance. Any scenes he has with the rest of his family will also be interesting, with him potentially serving as an ideological foil to Aemond and the other Greens.
Rhaenyra Takes King’s Landing

Eventually, Rhaenyra does take King’s Landing from the Greens and rules from the Iron Throne itself, one of the most likely House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers. Enraged by the loss of her sons Jace and (allegedly) Viserys, Rhaenyra launches a merciless attack. Aemond and his dragon Vhagar are away from the city, while Rhaenyra has Syrax and Daemon has Caraxes, along with four other riders and their dragons to back them up. Alicent’s brother is killed in the battle, while Rhaenyra orders the execution of Alicent’s father Otto Hightower after she has retaken the city. Aegon and Alicent’s grandchildren (she will possibly still have only one granddaughter at this time in the show) manage to escape the city.
Rhaenyra and Alicent Meet Again

However, Alicent and her daughter Helaena remain as captives in the Red Keep once King’s Landing is under Rhaenyra’s rule. This means more profound, face-to-face scenes between Rhaenyra and Alicent are in the cards. In Fire & Blood, Alicent proposes dividing up the Seven Kingdoms between Rhaenyra and Aegon in order to end the war, which Rhaenyra refuses. House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers might include a very different conversation between Rhaenyra and Alicent than the one that happened in the Great Sept this season. At this point, Rhaenyra will have lost more of her children and possibly become more bloodthirsty, while Alicent has been shut out of planning the war. However, the two women may still both be desperate to end the war and hold a lingering affection for one another.
Criston Cole Dies at the Butcher’s Ball

Everyone who feels like they can’t stand another minute of Criston Cole won’t have to put up with him much longer (no hate to Fabien Frankel—he’s doing his job well). Criston dies at the battle known as the Butcher’s Ball, called this because of the mass slaughter on the Greens’ side. With his forces severely depleted by other conflicts, Criston finds himself badly outnumbered when her faces the rivermen and the Winter Wolves sent by Cregan Stark. Criston tries to negotiate a surrender and then tries to fight the opposing side’s three leaders, but is shot down by Robb Rivers. The Blacks’ allies then kill most of the Greens present. This might actually be a more heroic ending for Criston of trying to protect his soldiers after this season showed him gaining a greater understanding of what a war of dragons really means.
Baela Loses Her Dragon Moondancer

After fleeing King’s Landing, Aegon reunites with his dragon Sunfyre and travels to Dragonstone, where he convinces some of Rhaenyra’s followers to turn against her. They successfully take Dragonstone, with Daemon’s daughter Baela being the only major Black present at the time. Baela and her dragon Moondancer battle Aegon and Sunfyre, resulting in Moondancer’s death and Baela’s injury and capture. Baela does not have it easy for the rest of the war, being held as a hostage and nearly executed by Aegon until her grandfather eventually negotiates her release. However, given Baela’s commitment to Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon, this will hopefully be a satisfying culmination of her arc.
Daemon and “Nettles” Track Vhagar Together

The theory that Daemon’s other daughter Rhaena will be merged with Nettles, the dragonseed who claims Sheepstealer, seems to be coming true. This means that she and Daemon may actually have some interesting scenes coming up together. Fire & Blood says that Daemon and Nettles spend time together tracking Aemond and Vhagar. It is rumored in Westerosi history that Daemon and Nettles were lovers, but this will probably not be the case with Rhaena. Daemon has had few impactful scenes with either of his daughters so far, with Baela saying she sometimes thinks she hates him. Daemon and Rhaena alone with only their dragons may result in some compelling scenes of them reflecting on their relationship and the war’s trajectory.
A Rift Forms Between Rhaenyra and Corlys

After Ulf and Hugh betray her, Rhaenyra becomes deeply suspicious of Nettles and Addam. Nettles being Rhaena might change this, as Rhaenyra presently trusts her stepdaughter. Regarding Addam, this plot point will probably remain the same. Addam and his brother Alyn of Hull are Corlys Velaryon’s bastard sons; Corlys eventually makes Alyn his heir. Because of the “Two Betrayers,” Addam becomes a point of contention between the Queen and her Hand when Corlys defends the dragonrider. Corlys helps Addam flee King’s Landing to escape Rhaenyra’s wrath; Rhaenyra then imprisons Corlys. This proves to be Rhaenyra’s downfall when the Velaryon fleet abandons her out of loyalty to their lord, leading to her losing King’s Landing—which might not happen until House of the Dragon Season 4.
Daemon and Aemond Finally Face Each Other

Potentially not among House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers is the inevitable confrontation between Daemon and Aemond, as the showrunners may want to save what is sure to be an amazing battle for season 4. Throughout House of the Dragon, Daemon and Aemond have been framed as each other’s match, destined to meet one another on the battlefield. This comes to pass towards the end of the war when Daemon and Caraxes fight Aemond and Vhagar in the Battle Above the Gods Eye. The battle ends when the dragons, locked in combat, spiral and crash into the lake below them. Just before the collision, Daemon leaps from his dragon and stabs Aemond through his (missing) eye. Both dragons and presumably their riders are killed, although Daemon’s body is never found. It seems likely that this will be tied up with the bloody end to the war in the final season—but there are still plenty more House of the Dragon Season 3 spoilers to look forward to sooner rather than later.
