Rest in peace. With the sudden news, many TV fans might be wondering how André Braugher died.

Born in Chicago in 1962, Braugher graduated from Stanford with his B.A. and pursued an MFA in acting at Julliard.  He made his film debut in Glory and portrayed the lead role in the TNT telefilm The Court-Martial of Jackie Robinson. However, he’s best known for his role as Det. Frank Pembleton, the stoic-yet-explosive lead role in Homicide: Life on the Street on NBC. His portrayal earned an Emmy for lead actor in a drama series in 1998.  Braugher also starred as Nick Atwater in the mini-series Thief where he second Emmy for his performance.

What fans may know Braugher from the most would be the hit Fox/NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where he played another cop, but an extremely different one from his previous role. His role of Capt. Raymond Holt was sprinkled with just the right amount of humor in the comedy show. “I just felt as though it was an opportunity to do something strikingly different from the rest of my career,” Braugher told the Associated Press in 2019. “I like it because it just simply opens up my mind and forces me to think in a different way. So I think I’ve become much more sort of supple as an actor, and more open to the incredible number of possibilities of how to play a scene.”
