If you’ve watched The Iron Claw, you might be wondering how Kerry Von Erich died and how his legacy affects professional wrestlers today. The film is directed by Sean Durkin and stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Stanley Simmons, and Harris Dickinson as Kevin, Kerry, Mike, and David Von Erich—the brothers who are a professional wrestling dynasty after the patriarch and their father Fritz Von Erich. The movie touches on their successes in the ring and on the so-called “Von Erich curse” which strikes tragedy upon each brother.

“It’s a 40-year-old story,” Sean Durkin said about the movie. “But the issues of masculinity, how we tell our boys to be, what makes a man and those sort of notions – as much as they’re getting better, it’s still a major issue. That was something that was very close to me while making this film.”

Kevin Von Erich is the only brother among the four that is still alive. Zac Efron emphasized why it was so important to have his input in the biopic. “Playing somebody who’s real and still alive adds an extra layer of complexity, I think,” the High School Musical actor said during a Q&A of the movie. “As an actor, it’s a fine line. You want to do everything you can to make sure it’s an honest portrayal of the character, without going so hard that it’s an impersonation. And for this movie, just knowing that he was going to be out there and would ultimately see it, I didn’t know if I was going to do a good job or not.”

“It was very motivating. It was incredibly motivating,” he continued. “That would keep me going in the gym and in the ring, just wanting to make him proud.”

In preparation for the role, Jeremy Allen White went through extensive training to get the professional wrestler’s moves right. “I knew I couldn’t get as big as Kerry. I just don’t think it was physically possible for me,” the actor said after a screening of the film. “I’m a pretty little guy, but I tried. I don’t think it’s possible for any human on the planet. There is this story I love about Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kerry were in the same room once, and Kerry popped his shirt off and Arnold Schwarzenegger himself was too nervous to take his shirt off around Kerry. That’s how big this man was. We were all trying.”

As for the costumes in the movie, it had such an impact on the actors. “We definitely had to put vanity aside and get used to inhabiting these clothes,” Zac Efron told People while Harris Dickinson described them as “these tiny spandex sort of things.” He continued, “Those were the early days of meeting each other as well. And we were full-body shaved by our wonderful makeup department.”

Jeremy Allen White added, “I felt very vulnerable all the time. The wardrobe was so important to the men at the time. You had to commit… or else.” With the movie not explicitly showing Kerry’s death, here’s how Kerry Von Erich died.
