He might be one of the best footballers in the world, but he’s also been plagued with injury. When he went down during Brazil’s World Cup qualifying loss against Uruguay on October 17, 2023, football fans the world over were left wondering how long Neymar will be out for this time.

Neymar, whose full name is Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, was born on February 5, 1992, in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil. His father, Neymar Santos Sr., is a former footballer himself who quickly became his son’s mentor after witnessing his budding potential for the sport. At the age of 11, his family moved to So Vicente, Brazil, so that he could join the youth team Portuguesa Santista. In 2003, they moved once again to Santos, Brazil, where he became a member of Santos FC to receive training with the Santos youth program. It was here that Neymar began his career, following in the footsteps of footballers like Pepe, Pelé and Robinho who all got their start at Santos.

His impressive resume includes successes as a member of the Brazilian National Team. When he was only 18 years old, he was picked for Brazil’s senior team for the first time, playing his debut match in a game against the United States. Since then, he has competed for Brazil at a number of international events, including the 2011 South American Youth Championship, the 2013 Confederations Cup, three Copa America tournaments in 2011, 2015 and 2019, 2011, two Summer Olympics in 2012 and 2016, along with two World Cups in 2014 and 2018, among others. After six years at Paris Saint Germain, Neymar joined Al Hilal in the big-spending Saudi Pro League for a fee of €90 million ($98.6m) in August 2023.

While he’s regarded as one of the best footballers in the world, his career has also been plagued with bad luck, missing a total of 424 days with no activity due to injuries. When he stumbled on the pitch in the second half against Uruguay, gripping the back of his knee in agony, football fans the world over were left wondering how long Neymar will be out for this time. It’s not good news.
