The Vampire Diaries cements itself as one of the most iconic franchises of the teen supernatural genre. However, behind-the-scenes drama had affected the cast and the duration of their stay.

A new book written by Entertainment Weekly editor Samantha Highfill revealed that Nina Dobrev, Candice King, and Kat Graham were the “lowest-paid series regulars” on the show for the first two seasons. The show aired from 2009 to 2017 and experienced several cast changes. One that included the main character of the series, Elena Gilbert, played by Dobrev.

On the contrary, series regulars like Ian Somerholder, who had the highest pay in the cast, stayed during the whole run of the show even if they had some disagreements. “I was so upset about the trajectory of Damon, so much so that at one point I was sitting across from Julie in her office in Atlanta almost in tears—actually, my eyes were quite misty—and asked out of the show,” he explained in the book about how he wanted to quit during Seaon 3. “I was so angry about it. I wanted off. Because I saw the writing on the wall. Damon was heading toward the love-interest role.”
