Trigger Warning: This article contains depictions of sexual assault and abuse. He was the Nickelodeon voice actor who was convicted of child sex abuse in 2004 and James Marsden’s Brian Peck letter of support resurfaced in the ID documentary mini-series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kid’s TV. While Marsden, best known for his roles in Westworld, Jury Duty and The Notebook, wasn’t involved in the children’s network at the time, he had known Peck for 14 years.

In 2003, Peck was arrested on 11 charges — including sodomy, lewd act upon a child 14 or 15 by a person 10 years older, and oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance. A year later, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender. 41 people submitted letters of support to the judge in the case in the hopes that their accounts would be considered when determining Peck’s sentence, Marsden among them.

“I was hoping that the outcome would be that he goes to jail, he is there for a while, and that he would never be able to work with kids again, which would in turn pretty much mean that you’re not gonna work in Hollywood because very few productions don’t have a least one kid on the set,” said Drake Bell, who testified he’d been abused by Peck at age 15. “That’s not what happened at all.”

After he was released from prison, Peck landed a job at Disney Channel for the show The Suite Life Of Zach & Cody. However, Variety reported that he was terminated after they learned of his history. Court documents obtained by the Daily Mail stated that Peck is only “prohibited from direct contact with children, not from being part of productions in which children are acting.” When asked about the documentary Peck said he “had no comment on it.”

More than 20 years after the trial, James Marsden’s letter of support for Brian Peck has been revealed and its contents are surprising, though it’s unclear how aware he was of the case against Peck at the time.
