After being screenshot for allegedly liking Foxx’s post, followers came for Jennifer Aniston, too, causing her to switch off comments on her Instagram account. She shared in a statement: “This really makes me sick,” which was posted on Instagram Stories. “I did not ‘like’ this post on purpose or by accident. And more importantly, I want to be clear to my and anyone hurt by this showing up in their feeds – I do not support antisemitism. And I truly don’t tolerate HATE of any kind. Period.”

Saturday, August 5, 2023: Foxx apologizes

In another social media post, Foxx apologized for the post. “I want to apologize to the Jewish community and everyone who has been offended by my post. I now know my choice of words have caused offense and I am sorry. That was never my intent,” he wrote. “To clarify, I was betrayed by a fake friend and that’s what I meant by ‘they’ not anything more. I only have love in my heart for everyone. I love and support the Jewish community. My deepest apologies to anyone who was offended. Nothing but love always.”

National Director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted to thank Foxx for his apology. “We welcome @iamjamiefoxx’s apology and thank him for his clarification. Furthermore, we wish him well as he recovers from his prior hospitalization,” he wrote online.

Friday, August 4 2023: Anti-Semitic Instagram post

On Friday August 4, 2023, Foxx shared on Instagram white text “They killed this dude named Jesus… what do you think they’ll do to you?” over a black background, using the hashtags #fakefriends #fakelove. Jennifer Aniston appeared to like Foxx’s Friday post in a screenshot shared by A Wider Frame—an outlet that aims to provide “a better overall understanding and scope of Jewish world news,” per its website. The post has since been deleted.

One interpretation of the post is that “they” was a reference to an idea used to justify violence against Jews for centuries: The crucifixion of Jesus Christ after Judas betrayed him by turning him into the Romans. A major document signed by the worldwide Roman Catholic church’s leadership during the Second Vatican Council in 1965 officially condemned the idea that Jews were collectively guilty for Christ’s killing.

However, some fans jumped to Foxx’s defense, arguing that “they killed Jesus” is a phrase commonly used in the Black community. “Jesus said in the Bible, “If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” So here we are. WE understood what was said,” one fan wrote. Another said: “If you knew anything about sayings in black Christian households you’d know that this was not meant in reference to Judaism or the Jewish people. It was more directed at his disciples as being fake friends. Que an old black granny saying ‘they killed Jesus, what you think they’d do to you’ it’s a way of saying if they did it to him you sho ain’t special hunny. I understand the tropes towards Jewish people. All this would have taken was a second of conversation and thought.”
