Kenshi Yonezu
Jiro Konami

Every so often at his sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall, Kenshi Yonezu murmured the word “Sugoi.” Loosely, it translates to wow, amazing, terrific, or just any phrase of awe. He looked out at the crowd while saying it with a glistening look in his eye. That feeling of awe is clearly mutual among the audience, who exchanged the same astonished feeling every time Yonezu introduced a new song.

The Japanese artist has garnered a cult following ever since he started making Vocaloid music under the pseudonym Hachi. In 2012, he began making music under his own name, and ever since, he’s been a staple in the Japanese music scene with genre-defying hits like “Lemon” (the music video is the most-watched music video in Japan) and “Peace Sign.” To a global audience, he’s often known for his contributions to anime soundtracks such as My Hero Academia, Chainsaw Man, and The Medalist. Recently, he’s also been tapped to add a song for Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning film The Boy and the Heron.

His triumphant debut in New York for his JUNK tour is just one amazing moment in his meteoric journey to the top. It makes sense for his vision to helm together at one of the US’s most iconic music venues. Yonezu’s performance is a breathtaking example of being submerged in an artist’s world. Here are some highlights from the show.
