Amid the British monarch’s cancer diagnosis, royal followers can’t help but wonder if King Charles dies, who becomes King? Charles was admitted to hospital on Friday, January 25, 2024, for a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate, but “a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” a royal statement said.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”

The statement continued: “The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

CBS News royal contributor Julian Payne, who served as communications director for then-Prince Charles, told CBS Mornings at the time of King Charles’ diagnosis that the royal has generally enjoyed “very robust health” throughout his life. “So, this will be something he’s not used to,” Payne said. “I think he will be stoic about it. I think he will do what the doctors are asking him to do, and I think his eye will be firmly focused on getting back to the job and getting back to full fitness.”

But of course, being a royal doesn’t make you infallible and all conversation falls on what this means for Prince William and, if King Charles dies, who will become king. Because, according to one royal biographer, he “will never abdicate,” per Newsweek.
