Lewis Hamilton's Style Through the Years

In 2007, when Hamilton released his autobiography “Lewis Hamilton: My Story,” he began solidifying his place as a menswear style icon. The Formula One driver attended his book launch in London wearing a classic black sportcoat, a black undershirt, dark wash denim and glossy black loafers. He accessorized with a floral knit lapel pin. The jeans and sportcoat combo is one of the most long-standing approaches to the high-low situation that Hamilton pulled off effortlessly. The lapel pin is also one of the quintessential accessories a man can wear with a sportcoat or blazer, which should be worn more often.
Leather Jacket

Among the many must-have staples in a men’s wardrobe, the leather jacket is necessary for anyone living anywhere without year-round summer temperatures. At the 2009 Amber Fashion in Support of Elton John AIDS Foundation show in Cannes, France, Hamilton wore a head-to-toe neutral ensemble, featuring a buttery chocolate brown leather jacket with an aviator collar and ribbed cuffs, a dark grey V-neck top, dark wash denim and black lace-up shoes. He accessorized the look with a ring, watch and bracelet. It was an elevated approach to the minimalist aesthetic.

As Hamilton continued his meteoric rise to Formula One stardom, the fashion industry began taking notice of the racer. That meant the Fashion Week invitations started rolling in. In 2015, Hamilton attended the Louis Vuitton 2016 runway show, wearing a head-to-toe ensemble from the brand. He kept it classic and elevated in a dark grey micro-check double-breasted suit, with a white shirt and black lace-up shoes. He donned a pair of shades for an air of mystery. A double-breasted suit is an absolute staple in any man’s wardrobe. The advantage of a double-breasted suit is that the wide-peak lapels draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of added height.
Varsity Jacket

If there’s one thing Hamilton loves, it’s a good outerwear piece. At Vivienne Westwood’s fall 2016 runway show, Hamilton arrived wearing a statement jacket from the brand, with details including tartan sleeves, blue trim cuffs, a collar with two parallel stripes and a floral print body with sequin accents. While people usually go for the sportier varsity jackets with a solid color body and leather sleeves, it is possible to take a more out-of-the-box approach to them and have more fun with outerwear.
Off-Duty Style

Hamilton is used to constantly being camera-ready for interviews or red-carpet-ready for public appearances, but even when he’s not “on” he doesn’t let his style waiver. During New York Fashion Week in September 2017, Hamilton was off-duty and was seen walking around the trendy SoHo neighborhood wearing a green baseball call, a black Off-White logo T-shirt with orange lettering, a New York logo black jacket, two gold chains, white track pants with blue, orange and yellow piping on the sides from Palm Angels, and black slip-on shoes. It was an approach to the logomania trend that didn’t leave him looking like a billboard advertisement.
Tommy Hilfiger

Few of Hamilton’s brand relationships in the fashion industry are stronger than his one with Tommy Hilfiger. A year after their successful fall 2018 collaboration, Hamilton attended Hilfiger’s Milan Fashion Week store opening in September 2019. Respectfully, he wore a full Tommy Hilfiger look, including a white Tommy Hilfiger logo T-shirt, a red plaid overshirt, blue pants, and beige boots. His approach to colorblock represented all the colors of the Tommy Hilfiger logo, namely red, white and blue. The trifecta of colors can be pulled off without looking like the Fourth of July; it just takes the right approach to color coordinating.
Camouflage

Camouflage might not be considered the most stylish pattern in the world by some, but Hamilton pulled it off well with an incognito look featuring camouflage overalls, white and green sneakers, a white T-shirt, rectangular sunglasses, and an N-95 COVID-19 mask. His choice to wear his overalls only buckled on one shoulder created an aesthetic of intended disheveledness. It was blue-collar inspiration meets creative fashion.
Regal Purple

At the 2022 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, Hamilton boldly approached color wearing an all-purple Gianni Versace ensemble. His looks included a purple printed silk shirt with matching baggy cargo pants. He accessorized with a beaded necklace, rings, a watch, and yellow-tinted sunglasses to complement his vivid ready-to-wear pieces. He completed the look with black chunky boots and a black baseball cap. In many cultures, purple represents royalty, nobility and luxury, fitting for one of the most famed Formula One drivers in the world. More men need to embrace color and step out of just wearing neutrals. There is more to life than black and white, as exhibited by Hamilton.
