Lightsaber Color Meanings & the Significance of Yellow in The Acolyte

Green

Green is a common color for Jedis, used among the most powerful including Master Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and of course, Luke Skywalker himself (although Mr. Skywalker has used other colors. In A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi gives Luke his father Anakin’s blue lightsaber; then in Return of the Jedi, Luke builds a replacement lightsaber with a green plasma blade and a hilt similar to Obi-Wan’s weapon).

Green is most commonly used by Jedi Consular—one of the three distinct schools of thought a member of the Jedi Order could decide to study. Consulars value peace, are skilled in negotiation, and rarely use their weapon unless it is for defense. They also focus on intellectual pursuits, meditation, and the use of the Force for healing and enlightenment, so green makes perfect sense.

Blue

Blue is also a popular and common color among the Jedi. Blue indicated a Jedi Guardian, another of the three schools of thought. Guardians are the group’s highly skilled combatants, emphasizing martial arts, battlefield tactics, and the use of the Force in combat situations. Notable Jedis with blue lightsabers include Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker (initially, as mentioned before), and his father Anakin before (is this a spoiler alert if the movie came out in 1980?) he becomes Darth Vader.

Yellow

Yellow is a rare lightsaber color often (though not Star Wars cannon) associated with Jedi Sentinels, a type of Jedi that balances combat and scholarly pursuits. They’re also known for being realists who enjoy learning skills that don’t require Jedi training. 

Characters that have used yellow lightsabers include Jedi Temple Guards and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda in The Mandalorian). Jedi Knight Yord is the only main member of The Acolyte cast who uses a yellow lightsaber.

Red

Red is the color associated with the Sith aka the Dark Side. Red lightsabers are sometimes created through the process of “bleeding” a kyber crystal, signifying the wielder’s connection to the dark side. Sith Lords like Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, and the Grand Inquisitor all wielded red lightsaber blades. The Sith is defined by anger, fear, aggression, and a lust for power—red makes sense for their lightsabers as it’s a color frequently associated with rage.

White

In Star Wars, white lightsabers are rare, and the current canon only recognizes one character who has carried one: Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi Padawan who helped in the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Ahsoka created her white lightsabers by purifying kyber crystals from the Sixth Brother’s lightsaber in a duel, which turned them from red (the Sith color) to white to reflect her non-affiliation with the Jedi or Sith.

Purple

Purple is another rare lightsaber color, most prominently wielded by Mace Windu, a highly skilled Jedi Master portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the prequel trilogy. There’s no lore here because purple was chosen by the actor to make himself stand out. Then again, purple is a combination of the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red, which makes sense for this character.

“I said to George, ‘You think maybe I can get a purple lightsaber?'” Jackson said in an interview on The Graham Norton Show. “He’s like, ‘Lightsabers are green, or lightsabers are red.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I want a purple one. I’m like the second-baddest Jedi in the universe next to Yoda.’ He’s like, ‘Let me think about it.'” He added, “And when I came back to do reshoots, he said, ‘I’m going to show you something. It’s already caused a shitstorm online.’ And he had the purple lightsaber, and I was like, ‘Yeah!'”
