“Fast Car” depicts the everyday life of working-class people and the desire to get out of that cycle. The third verse includes an account of taking care of an alcoholic father and the narrator having various jobs throughout the song.

Chapman revealed the inspiration for the song and how her upbringing framed it. “I believe that I wrote the song “Fast Car” in 1986,” she told CDRI. “At the time that I wrote the song, I actually didn’t really know who I was writing about. Looking back at it, and this happens with other songs as well, that I feel like I understand it only later… I think that it was a song about my parents… And about how when they met each other they were very young and they wanted to start a news life together and my mother was anxious to leave home. My parents got married and went out into the world to try to make a place for themselves and it was very difficult going.”

Why Luke Combs Covered Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”

“Its one of the first songs I’ve ever remember hearing at all. It came out two years before I was born,” he told Grady Smith. “My dad’s a huge music guy and he listens to everything. I remember him playing it in the truck and play it on the cassette and play the whole album. It was like I knew it was a hit song before I knew what a hit song was, or even cared what a hit song was. I liked all the songs on the album, but I liked this song off the album.”

One notable (and the only) change in the song is in the last verse, where he changed the lyrics of the last refrain, “Is it fast enough so you can fly away?” to “Is it fast enough so we can fly away?” It reflects back to a refrain earlier in the song rather than pinpointing it at a character from the song, but togetherness. According to his manager Chris Kappy, Combs was very devoted to keeping the song the way it is. “Luke is a songwriter too and Tracy is one of his favorite artists. So his goal was to never change the song,” he told Variety on Combs’ decision to keep the working roles the way they are. “His goal was to honor the perfection that it is, and changing the gender never crossed his mind.”

The song wasn’t initially aimed for airplay on the radio, but they submitted in anyway. “We didn’t know if we were even going to be able to go to radio with ‘Fast Car’” down the line, then alone right then, Kappy told Variety. “Who knew that ‘Fast Car’ was going to do what it did and then end up jumping one” of the two songs that’d already been delivered to radio? “We had to pull one down (“Five Leaf Clover”) because ‘Fast Car’ started to go crazy. We had to make a very quick pivot when it went wide outside of country.” 

Kappy also recounted that they reached out to Chapman for her blessing. “Whatever way she decided to go, we were going to go. We’re just not that camp, and Luke’s not that artist,” to push it to No. 1 without getting a nod of approval. “It’s her song. That’s the right thing to do, and we got to her, and it was blessed for us to do more with it.”
